Do some babies never get more efficient at bfeeding?

DD2 is now 7wks old. She has got herself into a good routine with feeds at roughly 7am, 10.30am, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm and 1.00am. At each feed she usually takes 1/2hr on the first boob, has a 10min break and then goes 20mins or so on boob 2.

I know this routine is enviable for some, but I think she manages mostly because each feed takes such a long time - about 1hr 10mins all in. She seems to drink fairly steadily when on the breast.

However, I also have quite a jealous 2.0yr old DD1, who is getting really fed up with me being glued to sofa for so long. To make it worse I need both hands when feeding, as flat nipples mean DD slips off easily so needs to be held firmly in place.

Will DD2 get quicker at feeding? If so, when? DD1's feeds got longer, not shorter, as she got older, but she was a nightmare to feed and that is a whole different story.

I'm beginning to contemplate switching DD2 to bottles as the hours of whining from DD1 (despite efforts to distract her with stickers, stories, DVDs, CBeebies, smoothies etc) are beginning to get to me.

Hi - a number of us in the April 08 antenatal thread seem to have found that LOs feeding has been more efficient in the last few weeks - which would be about 8-10 weeks, so it might happen for you soon. That said my boy still takes about the same time as your DD and he's 8.5. Think it might be a very individual thing. Seems a pity to stop BFing because of it but I don't have another child to deal with.

have you thought about getting a sling to feed in. I just a kari me because my DD takes HOURS and it has been great. She is very comfortable feeding in it

Babies definitely get more efficient. It takes less and less time. Before you know it your baby will be finishing a feed in 10mins

WWomb - I have a Kari-Me. It is fab and DD2 (and DD1) sleep like a dream in it. However, I've never mastered feeding in the sling - I can't even manage lying down. The baby just seems to fall off the boob and/or can't even latch on in the first place.
