Lollipops as a choking hazard

Orange Strawberry GIF

My husband insists on giving our almost 2 year old ChupaChup style lollipops despite them being one of the top choking hazards. He believes that as they are advertised as for children, that they are perfectly fine to give and thinks I have been indoctrinated by the internet.
Please complete this poll to let me know what age you would consider giving your children lollipops or other hard candy/sweets.

I used to work in a Hospital and there was a long-term patient there who had severe brain damage as he was running with a lollipop in his mouth and fell and it got lodged in his trachea

I teach primary and have banned lollies from my class. When I see my nephew who is 9 with one I make him sit down to eat it or it goes away.

When I was at primary school a boy at our local secondary school fell while eating one and died while walking to the bus. Our school staff seen it happen and tried to help. We were never allowed lollies at school again. I went back on teaching placement and anytime a lolly was bought in those staff took it off the child and told the story to the parents.

As far as I’m aware I think the labels on Chupa Chups says not for under 3s possibly not under 5?

Why is he giving a 2 year old sweets!

How about chocolate lollies or buttons instead. Choc covered strawbs etc even the "fruit sweets" you get
I'm not a healthy eating freak but I do think that's not great.

Maybe drop the choking hazard angle and move onto the teeth and sugar angle and ask him to buy other sweets or choc, if that would work.

They’ve been a known choking hazard for well over 100 years! I try and take them off my children. I’ll occasionally allow them to have one sat down and handed over the moment it becomes loose.

Is your DH generally dim?

My children are 6 and 4, and have been told that they aren't allowed these at all. When they are teens then fine, but choking is my biggest fear and these are the worst. I remember how easily they used to come off the stick when I was younger.

tealandteal · 18/02/2026 20:03

No, my children are 8 and 3 and they know these are not allowed. They are a choking hazard and they mean the sweet is sitting in their mouth for ages. So the sugar is sitting on their teeth. I take them out of their Halloween candy and they understand.

Riverflow6 · 18/02/2026 20:05

My kids would never be allowed these by me due to rotting their teeth. My husband has given our 5 yo one a few times and I don’t like it

sundayvibeswig22 · 18/02/2026 21:09

I never allowed my dc to have a lollipop like that. I was terrified of it coming off and then chocking plus it’s really bad for the teeth.

He’s giving a 1 year old
sweets?!? That’s terrible.
