projectile vomit & green poo...help!

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help. My son is bottle fed (on Aptamil Easy Digest) & has started scarily projectile vomiting after some feeds (not always, but getting to once a day, at random times). He's having approx 4-5oz every 3 hours, but isn't poo-ing regularly. When he does go, it's a bright green colour & so runny that it tends to go pretty much everywhere. Very rarely do we get the mustard colour I was told to expect! He's putting on weight & is very solid so am not expecting much sympathy from the doctor, but do you think I ought to get him checked out?

I've been told that green poo is a sign of a tummy bug & obviously don't want him to be unwell, but this has been going on for a while now. He's just over 7 weeks old.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about the vomiting.

But I'm currently maternity nursing a seven week old who is on Aptimal Easy Digest. We are also experiencing mega poos that are greenish and liquidy. I have done some research on the internet and this seems normal for the formula.

Off to the Paediatricians this week to see if we can try a different formula.

Hello - how old is DS?

My DD started to projectile vomit at about 5 months and it got worse and worse until in January I managed to get a consultation with a Paed specialist. DDs poo was never solid, sometime so runny it just ran down her legs. Was told by everyone it was a recurrent tummy bug but she continued to eat so I ruled that one out.

The consol paed said it was silent reflux. She had so much acid in her tum it was not only making her vomit but also destroying any good bacteria in her bowel.

We were prescribed Ranitidine and Infant Gaviscon of which she is still on (now 13 months). I put a thread up on MN about it and go mixed reviews as a treatment pathway. However, for us it was genius. From the first day she stopped vomiting (she once went 30 days on the trot with some form of vomit) and she started to get more tolerant to most food groups. She is still intol to Wheat but now it just gives her eczema rather than making her vom. Also now allowed to give egg in cakes but have to wait till 18 months to try pure egg at the hospital.

DD did not poo regularly but when she did you had to run for cover, hence I knew in my heart of hearts it was not a bug.

I would get him checked as it really does take it out of them. Is he developing at a good rate? I know DD's developement (crawling etc) was suffering as she was just so tired all the time. Today she took her first steps - horray!

Any chance it could be silent reflux?

Thanks for your msgs.

Nannynz - reassuring to hear that you are having the same probs. Is the baby you are looking after going regularly or doing a mega poo once every couple of days?

BlueBumedFly - hooray for the first steps! DS is developing at a brilliant rate, so no problems there. He is well above average weight for his age & is very active & chatty. It could be silent reflux, but it doesn't happen with every feed - can be very random. Will follow your advice of just getting him checked out at the docs, although not sure how useful that will be.

Thanks to both of you for your help though - fingers crossed we don't have another projectile vomit incident on our bedsheets again tonight...!

DDs was not every feed, was very random and I could never put it down to anything. Very upsetting for all involved. Hope you get sorted very soon.

hi bubblechops,

Baby goes once or twice every 24 hours. He's drinking 4 - 6ozs five times in 24.

I'm inclined to think he is suffering from silent reflux but he is putting on weight well and is not vomiting at all, but from reading what bluebumedfly read perhaps he is.

He is due is paed's visit on Thursday and I'll ask mother to talk to paed about changing formula or something for silent reflux.

He sometimes will wake up quite upset from I think pain and usually it's because he has a burp so I think it is hurting his throat. Also coupled with he is not that great of a sleeper as he is either woken by wind or burp.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, he's my 13th baby and each one has led me to learn something new.

Is relactation a possibility?

50% of babies with reflux are refluxing as a result of cows milk protien intolerance. Green poo is also often a symptom.

Just a thought!

I would try a different formula. See if that makes a difference.
I used SMA and had no problems with that. Obviously not all babies will respond well to the same formula. Likewise if you breast fed for any time before going to formula it could just be his stomach getting used to it.

Going to see the health visitor tomorrow, so will ask about reflux & cows milk intolerance. Thanks for your advice - babies should come with guidance notes!
