EBF 3 week old fussing and crying on the breast

My 3 week old is fussing and crying when she’s feeding. She pulls off and cries before trying to latch again.

She has been struggling with gas recently and we rarely get a decent burp out of her so we were giving infacol but have reduced that because she was having much wetter poos. The crying is more recent than her gas problems.

She is above birth weight and having plenty of wet and dirty nappies so I’m hopeful it’s not a supply issue.

We struggled with latch at first but I thought we had cracked it. My nipples are no longer cracked etc. and feeding is generally comfortable.

Just concerned that either my supply
is dropping and she’s getting frustrated or she’s in pain for another reason. Anyone have any similar experiences?

Hi
My baby did this when she was overtired. It was almost like she didn’t know what she wanted and would bob on and off for a few hours. Is it like this for all feeds?

Confusedmermaid1 · 05/02/2026 21:47

@MrsPatrickDempsey does tend to be the evening/night feeds more so but does happen throughout the day sometimes. Normally she just feeds to sleep so we don’t really have to settle her for naps very often but I will try to keep track of her wake times more closely and see if that helps!

It’s really tough learning to read them and understand what’s going on! I do think that we really underestimate tiredness in babies though.

Sounds like a growth spurt due and she’s just stimulating production. Carry on feeding on demand and it’ll work itself out.

My baby did this when cluster feeding, it soon settled down. Keep going, you are doing great! Ours also struggled with gas too, she was so hard to burp, but she could support her own head etc quite early and then it became easier for her. Xx

Try to burp mid feed into you get the gas out and then latch on again to continue. You might have to do this a couple of times during feeding

Thanks all.. we are definitely in a cluster feeding/growth spurt period so hopefully once she’s through that she will be more settled during feeds (until the next growth spurt!)
Will try unlatching her for burping and hope that settles her a bit more too..

My first did this when CMPA (cows milk protein allergy) developed. Have you tried cutting out dairy?

Confusedmermaid1 · 05/02/2026 23:29

@Supporting2026 I was talking about this with a friend who BF a child with CMPA and it didn’t sound like my daughters symptoms were ‘severe’ enough to be CMPA. She isn’t ever inconsolable and prior to having infacol was having normal poo (no mucus/blood) so I’d sort of ruled it out. I will mention to the health visitor at our next appointment.
I don’t eat all that much dairy so I can definitely try and cut it out if the problem persists.

This sounds really normal and is probably cluster feeding and the witching hour (which is longer than an hour!).

Do you follow any IBCLCs on IG? If not, have a search as they have soooo much good advice in their grids!

My little girl is now 7 months and I went through a phase thinking she needed infacol etc. It’s all just variations of normal, her gut is maturing, and there is almost no evidence that infacol “works” other than making you feel better.

You’re doing such a great job EBF, remind yourself how awesome you are and try not to stress too much.
