Hi, I'm afraid I was pretty lucky with bfing...but really feel for you. Maybe this website might have some useful info?

copingvquietly · 13/06/2008 00:51

oh thankyou.ill go look.

Are they both sore all over? A blocked duct would normally only affect one breast and you'd be likely to find one area of the breast was more sore than the rest. I suppose you could be unlucky and get blocked ducts in both breasts at once, though.

Does it hurt in particular when breastfeeding? Another possibility might be thrush, in the breast tissue rather than on the nipples. Is there any sign of thrush in your baby's mouth?

Try taking a strong dose of ibuprofen / nurofen, it usually helps me. If it's very sore, then voltarol really does the trick (maybe you've got some from post-birth?). This can decrease your milk supply apparently, but I've never had a problem, and at 6m your supply should be well established.

Perhaps your baby is having a growth spurt, and requiring extra milk, and your boobs are stepping up to the mark for this? Have you started weaning (onto food or off bm) yet? (not that you should have if you haven't btw!) Any changes to frequency or duration of feeding?

Where is the pain? Nipple, breast? Surface? Inside?

If it's the breast, try having a hot shower, and massaging down from the sore area towards the nipple. Sure you know that already though, so sorry if I'm preaching to the converted

Good luck with the doctor. You could also try speaking to an NCT bf counsellor on the phone - they're not just for the early days.

In the meantime, definitely take some painkillers.

White spots in the mouth. Thrushy nappy rash. White tongue. But you may have thrush when the baby doesn't, or at least isn't showing any signs. Do you or your partner have thrush symptoms down below at all?

copingvquietly · 13/06/2008 08:27

the pain is around the nipple and i cant tell whether the pain is on or in iukwim.it hurts too bloody much.ive already tried expressing off it without much success.why me

You don't need to have thrush down below to have breast thrush. It sounds like either that or a blocked duct. If you don't get any luck at the doctor's do call one of the bf helplines who should be able to give you a good idea.
