I left a comment too, but it's still not up, they are moderated, so goodness knows what/if they'll post it!!

The DM still hasn't put my comment on their website

TinkerbellesMum · 13/06/2008 15:59

Apparantly she was rather misquoted on there which she's not too happy about, but she didn't say what. She said that she's in DM again today and doing Five News next week. She hasn't said anything about This Morning to me.

My comments aren't up either.

A pyschiatrist responds...

GreenMonkies · 13/06/2008 21:41

None of my comments ever get posted, they must be very heavily moderated, and only get posted if they "fit" the DM's agenda!

(I believe she is on TM on Monday, don't know which day for 5 news though)

Now they've got a poll (right hand side in pink).

buntinglicious · 14/06/2008 07:53

"And though Stella, 45, flouts convention and the recommendations of experts" What experts??? Do they mean Dr Hilary Misogynistic Judgeypants?

princessglitter · 14/06/2008 08:18

TM just read that psychiatrist's comment that there is no benefit to breastfeeding after six months . Does it suddenly turn into water?

Why would a psychiatrist be qualified to talk about breastfeeding anyway? Particularly when giving an opinion that not only contradicts WHO guidelines, but also Department of Health guidelines.

Babies still need milk at six months and can't drink cows milk unmodified, would he suggest that formula is preferable at six months?

The worrying thing is, people will read that and think that because a psychiatrist said it, it must be true.

I know how some of you lovely ladies would like to let the pyschiatrist know the error of his ways...

BTW, I was wrong, Stella is going to be on This Morning on Monday morning along with a psychiatrist (don't yet know if it is the same one...) she is also going to be on an Australian programme of a similar style (Today ?) but they won't send her tickets so she has to do it from a studio. Apparently she's turning requests down at the moment!

TinkerbellesMum · 15/06/2008 00:12

I meant name of the show, not that she's doing it today.

GreenMonkies · 15/06/2008 09:12

It's turning into quite a media storm isn't it? Sadly, I suspect this is more to do with the fact that Stella fits the "image" of a long-term breastfeeder (Middle class, older mum, working from home and homeschooling and so on) not because people are actually getting what she (and we) are saying. I fear that the Psych will try to make out that there's no need to nurse for this long etc etc.

I have set my Sky+ for tomorrow as I will be at work (because not all natural term breastfeeders stay at home with thier kids all day, gasp some of us combine working and breastfeeding ) and watching with interest, tinged with apprehension.

Don't have a Sky+ or a video recorder you can actually record on, so letm e know what happens

hercules1 · 15/06/2008 09:38

A poster on mumsnet said once that the reason I breastfed past a year was because I felt guilty because I work and it was my way of holding on to the children - snort

TeenyTinyTorya · 15/06/2008 09:40

I heard about her on my home-ed mailing list - can't believe the article is so biased - "insists" and the children's ages in capitals.

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2008 09:42

well they are FIVE and THREE so obviously deserve some CAPITALS

TeenyTinyTorya · 15/06/2008 09:48

I left a comment - couldn't believe the number of posters saying "she's just trying to minimise her kids' contact with other children" and "she can't let her kids go". Arrgh - people's miscocnceptions about things like this make me so mad!

sabire · 15/06/2008 10:18

I just love the way the nay-sayers completely disregard the fact that breastfeeding well into childhood has been the social norm for a good part of the human race since the dawn of time.

They keep going on about it not being 'necessary' these days as though that's a really good rationale for not doing it. I always feel like pointing out that having sex to concieve isn't strictly necessary either these days now that we know how to use turkey basters/have IVF, but men and women do it because it's mutually satisfying, and emotionally and physically healthier and more enjoyable than having your bits fiddled with by doctors. Ditto breastfeeding. It's more enjoyable and healthier for small children to drink milk from their mothers than have other less appropriate beverages from plastic cups/bottles. As far as I'm concerned it's a quality of life issue. Babies and small children deserve to be breastfed - they really do.
