Powder formula help!!

Hello!!

I need to start this with a disclaimer that I am a chronic over thinker and worrier.

My 6 week old dd has been really struggling with silent reflux with 2 episodes of choke on reflux acid. She has been fed kendamil RTF since birth and the colic and reflux has got worse. We saw a paediatrician yesterday who suspects cmpa so we have started prescription formula.

my question is how do people make the formula up quickly in the night! I have read the nhs advice.. and I’m worried to get a prep machine in case the water isn’t 70°c .. then I thought about a ninja kettle that you can set the water to be heated to 80°c .. but does the water have to be boiled before cooling?!

help!

No, it doesn't have to boil first, you need hot water because the powder isn't sterile not because the water itself is unsafe. I have a Bosch kettle that I set to 70° before making up formula. You can make the formula with some hot water then top up with cool, boiled water.

We used to make it up with boiling water, refrigerate, then heat up in the microwave in the middle of the night

Worked for us

This is what I do. Make 6-8 everyday and keep for up to 24 hours in the fridge. Heat in the microwave as needed.

It’s so hard as all advice is contradictory!! And I also feel like it’s written by someone who hasn’t had a hungry baby crying! 😂

We used a prep machine, honestly the risks are so minimal, provided you have clean drinking water generally.

The advice is to make up each bottle as needed, which is ridiculous quite frankly.

You could do a prep machine method with the kettle. Have previously boiled water in the fridge in a sterilised container.

Then make the bottle with boiled water from the kettle and cold water from the fridge.

The advice for the formulas suitable for CMPA is different. You must absolutely prepare it as per instructions on the carton. If it says not to use a “hot shot” this is becauae Youll be destroying valuable nutrients if you do.

It’s just not the same as regular formulas.

ThejoyofNC · 30/12/2025 06:50

Just get a prep machine OP, I wouldn't be without mine.

This is correct. What does the instructions say on the formula she has been prescribed?

Wynter25 · 30/12/2025 06:55

I make bottles in advance and keep in fridge

Wynter25 · 30/12/2025 06:57

My baby is on neocate. So has to be lukewarm

SleafordSods · 30/12/2025 17:17

Which formula have they been prescribed @Fullofthoughts?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 30/12/2025 17:30

Just get pre mixed for nighttime

Fullofthoughts · 30/12/2025 23:27

It’s the Aptamil Pepti 1, which is just the standard formula prep as per instructions on tin.
interesting that some milks are different…

This is incorrect. Boiling water destroys the nutrients.
Also there is no point in boiling water then putting it in the fridge as @stackhead suggests. The water is safe, it is the powder that is not, so if you were going to use 70 degree water to mix the formula, you can then add water from the tap.

Have a look at a rapid cool bottle. We got one last week and it's brilliant. It means milk is ready to drink in a few minutes, lifesaver in the middle of the night

we have just purchased 2 of these.. so hopefully that’s our answer!

This is what I find confusing, because the nhs say “leave kettle no longer than 30mins” this is because on average a kettle of 1litre after boiling cools to 70 by 30 mins
but we have been checking our kettle and by 20 mins the water is 75 degrees
but what we couldn’t work out is whether you can heat the water to say 80 degrees and use straight away.. or whether it has to boil first and then cool down

if that makes sense …

Ok, so the guidelines on preparation are here.

Just in case you weren’t aware this formula is still milk based so there is a chance that your LO will still react, in which case Youll need to ask for an amino based formula Flowers

Thanks! That’s what we have been doing.. however my LO can’t stand the wait for it to cool down and be RTF.
i think she’s been used to instant milk with the RTF formula!

with regards to the cmpa, we have go to try the pepti 1 first for 2 weeks as apparently lots of babies hate the taste of the amino acid based ones?

its such a minefield! And as I’m a FTM I feel like I have hit the ground sprinting!!!

It does sound like a bit of a steep learning curve!

If your LO does have difficulty with the taste the usual advice is to add alcohol free vanilla essence or Nesquik.

Has your LO been properly checked for Tongue Tie? Do any of these symptoms sound familiar?

She hasn’t yet been properly assessed. Been the paediatrician checked her suckle (which is super strong)
that list of symptoms there are a few but mainly the reflux ones.. eg- colic, hiccups. Gagging etc
but when she cries her tongue lifts like the photo and she sticks it out … so not sure 🤔
