I just wanted to know how long you can keep a made up feed out of the fridge for?
I know that once they have started to drink it then its no more than 2 hrs before you have to throw it away but how long is it if it hasn't been touched.
Im going to town and wanted to take a made up bottle with me.

Thank you xx

24 hours for milk in the fridge in a sterile and untouched bottle x

wingandprayer · 11/06/2008 10:01

Depends on how it's stored. Easiest thing is to take a bottle of water and right amount of powder in seperate container and just make it up when you need it. Put boiling water in now and should be cool enough to use by the time you need it, without having to ask someone to warm it for you

lulumama · 11/06/2008 10:01

one hour tops, each feed should be made fresh as it is needed with boiled water cooled for 30 minutes or so.

once they start drinking, it is within an hour also IIRC.

i would take a carton of ready made with you, as your baby is still very young, and using ready made is better than carrying round a made up bottle

peggotty · 11/06/2008 10:01

Are you going to keep it in cool bag or something. I would just take a carton if I was you, I think even 'untouched' made up bottles are dodgy to give after an hour or so...

NotABanana · 11/06/2008 10:02

Once it has been drunk from it is 1 hour.

I would make up the water and add the formula immediately before it needs to be drunk.

CrushWithEyeliner · 11/06/2008 10:03

oh sorry I misread - I thought you meant a made up stored in fridge bottle...
For an untouched feed out of the fridge it is still an hour

wingandprayer · 11/06/2008 10:04

Sorry I forgot new guidelines on making up formula only with boiling water. However I have done the cool(er) water and powder thing for 2 kids and never had any problems.

I don't even know what guidelines are to be honest - only read about them on MN so still not clear on what they actually now recommend.

AitchTwoCiao · 11/06/2008 10:08

i used to take boiling water in the bottle and put a wee tommee tippee container of powder in the neck. it would stay warm enough to use for about an hour, and any longer i could just ask a cafe for a cup of boiling water to top it up. sooooooo much easier than arsing about with either the impossible-to-open cartons or annoying coolbags, imo.

AitchTwoCiao · 11/06/2008 10:09

70degs, wing. v small chance of something disastrous happening, v big chance of baby dying if the disastrous thing does happen.

You can download the proper guidance leaflet from here

flowerybeanbag · 11/06/2008 10:12

I never used to take made up bottles to be used if it was going to be longer than an hour. Little cartons the way forward I think - we just used to keep a little pair of scissors in the changing bag for easy opening.

wingandprayer · 11/06/2008 10:17

Jesus, the formula manufacturers are laughing with their expensive ready made formula now aren't they?

(Do you have a leaflet for every occassion Bunty? )

CrushWithEyeliner · 11/06/2008 10:17

oh God yes take a carton they are fab

sweetbean · 12/06/2008 15:25

Sorry for the late reply but Thank you for all the advice.I went in town and bought one of thoughts powder dispense things which hold 3 feeds so much easier than carting round the entire box of milk !!!

Thanks again xx
