Too much milk!?!

Hello mums, I’m new to this app so bear with me. šŸ˜‚

my daughter turned 2 in November and recently she has been asking for bobo a LOT maybe 4/5 times a day. During the night if she wakes she asks for a bobo, she drinks about 16oz of not more sometimes. Her teeth are coming in (fang ones) so I’m hoping she’s just using the bottle as comfort. She’s also very constipated an I’m not sure is this because of the milk, unsure how to help her there.

can anyone give me any advise or tips please ? Xxx

She sounds hungry -
up her food in the day and also at night you need to think about weaning

girlmom01 · 19/12/2025 07:26

She eats 3 meals a day and has 2 snacks in between. Shes a chunker. She eats all fruit and veg and any meat is her favourite.

She understands when I say no more, so during the night I tell her there’s no milk at night time and she does cry but I just comfort her with cuddles until she understands there is no more. It’s hard but have to do it, it’s not good for her teeth either all the milk

Is she having a bottle or breastfeeding?

She normally doesn’t wake during the night, she sleeps well right through it’s just when she does she asks for milk. This all has only been happening in the last maybe 2 weeks at the most. I’m hoping it’s a phase but I need to do what I can to kick this drinking habit she has šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ¼

She is bottle fed.

Get rid of the bottles, they are terrible for her teeth.

No more milk after she brushes her teeth in the evening, water only.

No more bottles, up to 2 cups of milk in the day.

Easier said than done ā€˜get rid of the bottles’ I don’t mind her having a bottle but only if it’s one at night. She’s got dummies too.

Now definitely the time to stop overnight bottles then. A last one at bedtime, then brush teeth, and offer water/cuddles over night. It’s a difficult transition but you can do it.

Violinist64 · 19/12/2025 08:53

A two year old should not be having a bottle at all. It is very bad for her teeth. This is an ideal time of year to get her to give up her bottle. You can tell her that she is a big girl now and big girls drink from cups as bottles are for babies. Father Christmas is coming and will be bringing her presents and will need to take her bottle to a baby. You could have a trial run leading up to Christmas Eve and cut the teat so that it is less satisfying. It's time to go cold turkey.

If she's 2 years old it's literally as easy as 'get rid of the bottles' šŸ˜‚She's not going to sneak out to the shops and buy more with her pocket money!

oustedbymymate · 19/12/2025 08:53

Is it still a baby bottle like mam etc? Try switching to a toddler bottle. We used mam bottles and switched to tomee tipee ā€˜sports bottle’ that doesn’t leak and washes well. Offer her a cup of milk before bed. Then water in the night. If you think she is eating well it’s likely not hunger and more comfort. It’s likely a phase (isn’t it always!)

Lots of things aren't easy but that's no excuse. The bottles and dummies will be ruining her teeth and it's your job as a parent to stop it.

Violinist64 · 19/12/2025 08:55

Just seen your update about dummies. I would get rid of the bottle first and then the dummies in a few months' time - perhaps at Easter.

Thank you for your comment. She is on mam bottles and dummies. I will have a look at cups, I think she would still take it as long as it was milk. Like I said I don’t mind her having milk at bedtime. She doesn’t get sweeties, sugar, only water. She can’t eat rubbish or her skin breaks out so not like her teeth are going to fall out her mouth next week like some people on this page think šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Yes I agree, one at a time.

If you switch her to a straw or sippy cup she will naturally reduce the milk intake over time as its not as "comforting" as sucking on a bottle. At 2 you should definitely swap her over as she should really not be having more than about 16oz-20oz during a 24 hour period including all dairy. Too much milk can inhibit iron uptake and lead to anaemia/also inhibits them eating other nutrient rich foods.

16-20oz is for under 12 months, over 12 months should be 12oz including all dairy.

You're probably right - or they say at least 12oz - but the underlying point is it sounds like this 2 year old is having way too much if she has 16oz just at night. My 13 month old is on roughly 14-16oz of milk plus occasional cheese, my 2 year old following the transition to a straw cup at about 18 months went from the same to about 10oz of milk a day very naturally as he just drinks less with the straw cup.

She doesn’t take 16oz at night šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ throughout the day I’d say about that

I would try and stop the milk after teeth brushing. I think it’s that that people mean. The sugar in the milk sits on the teeth overnight. Offer water on the night only. Not easy though. My friend watered down the milk to put them off but I just switched to water. Mine weren’t happy at first but took about two weeks.

keep dummies until you get off the bottle

Thanks, I’ve just ordered a nuk cup for her, she will still want milk. She won’t care that it’s not in a mam bottle. I could give her the carton to drink out of and she be pleased I think. I’m really stressed about it tbh. She’s a good teeth brusher thankfully.

I’ve put her down for a nap with milk in a tommee tippee cup, she knew it was milk in it and refused it. Cried heavily I offered her it again, refused. So I left it for her in her bed and she hasn’t touched it. What should I do now? I thinkign maybe at bed time offer her milk In a normal small cup, or a cup she chooses, drink it with cuddles, teeth and bed?
