If my 16mo weans now, does he still need a bottle?

DS2 feeds am and afternoon if I'm around (work full-time teaching).

At the childminder's he currently has an afternoon bottle of 240ml.

With me, a bf replaces that bottle.

If he weans soonish (I'm going away for a few days and it might be a good time to do it gently), will I still need to give him milk in some other form at this age?

He should still have milk but in a cup. HTH.

Thanks NAB

So cow's milk? It tends to make him a bit sicky - he had reflux and although seems ok now, the last time he had cow's milk in his sippy cup he sicked it up a bit. he prefers water.

He can milk in other ways through cheese, cheese sauce, custard, yogurts, etc if he can't drink it. And yes, cows milk unless he has been dx with an allergy.

You could try goats milk instead? It is often more easily digested by children.

Btw, you know that after a year of breastfeeding you supply is so well established that you can miss several days (even up to a week I think) without a feed and still go back to feeding. I have gone away for 2-3 days while still feeding DS1 who was a similar age. May make life a bit easier for you.

Pannacotta - yes I realise that my supply will probably be ok (already left him once for 4 days when he was much younger) but thought it might be a good time to stop bf.

Anyone have any idea of quantities of milk "needed"?

from 1 year they should have the equivalent of about 350mls (approx 12oz) but as the pp said it doesnt have to be in drink form if they take other sources of calcium (cheese, yoghurt, milk in cereal, etc)

HaventSleptForAYear · 10/06/2008 20:19

OK. Thank you. I'm SURE he won't drink 350mls (although I suppose a bottle of 240ml is a good start) but it sounds like I might need to keep the bottle up if I want him to drink enough.
