Being referred to a doctor because my exclusively bf dd is gaining too much weight.

Hi. I have posted about this before, but after my last visit to my HV I am getting more worried.
My dd is 16 weeks old and exclusively bf. She now weighs 16lb 15oz which is on the 98th centile on the growth charts. She was only 7lb 6oz when born so has jumped up the centiles quite quickly.
The HV has now said as she is only on the 75th centile for height there is a 2.5 'line' difference between her height and weight and if it gets to 3 we have to be referred as 'something else might be going on' (her words)

What else could be going on? I didn't think it was possible to over feed a bf baby.

Any experience would be gratefully received!

I would ignore HV.

My bf dd1 was pretty obese, in retrospect I think I did overfeed her - it kept her quiet! But after 6m, when she had solids too, she started getting slimmer and now at 8 years old is small and skinny - she's about 10th centile now after being always well over 90th as a baby.

The charts reflect growth patterns of a mainly ff population of babies. BF babies do sometimes cross centiles in an upward direction on these charts in the first 14 weeks because if bf is going well,it is likely to lead to faster rate than weight gain than ff during this time.

My third went up from the 75th to the 98th centile during his first 3 months........ Nobody ever suggested to me that this was anything other than a sign he was thriving on my milk!

Another vote for ignoring the HV here!

DS was on the 25th centile at birth, doubled his birth weight by 8 weeks and by three months was on the 98th centile. I got the same type of grief but spoke to a LLL counsellor and got lots of reassurance that it's impossible to overfeed an exclusively bf on demand baby.

DS stayed big and chubby until he got mobile and slimmed down as soon as he started walking (actually he mostly ran ). Now age 3 he's just stopped bfing, is on the skinny side and is extremely tiring active.

I hope this is reassuring for you!

Thank you so much for all the replies. I feel alot better.
At the end of the day I know there is nothing wrong with dd and she is perfectly happy and contented so I am going to try not to worry.

I exclusively bf my ds1. Have just looked up his weight at 16 weeks and it was 18lbs. I was always congratulated at the clinic on my bonny, bf baby. He was really fat but is now very, very skinny!

DS2 is 8 weeks today.
He was last weighed last week, at 7 weeks.
He weighed 13lb 10oz
Please don't worry about the weight, breastfed babies eat when they need to, or suckle for comfort, it's very unlikely there is a problem here.
