Are there any Stainless Steel baby bottles??

Hi,

Full disclosure - I'm not a Mum (I'm a 30 year old bloke) but bare with me, I think this is the best place to come for advice!

I've got a neurological condition that means I'm fed through a tube going into my stomach, liquid feed is pumped through this tube by a pump. I decant the feed into bottles that are supposed to be medical supplies but are actually just Sterifeed baby bottles that the standard Sterifeed teats screw on to, although I screw an adapter onto them to fit them to my pump.

I've started having to warm my feed up quite a bit and am concerned about the safety of putting 50° C fluids into a plastic bottle because of all the chemicals that will leech out of the plastic. Switching to the Sterifeed Glass bottles solves the problem but they're much heavier that the plastic bottles which is a pain when I'm carrying the pump around.

Does anyone know of any Stainless Steel bottles that will take the Sterifeed teats (if they'll fit them, my adaptors will fit too), preferably around 250ml?

Thanks!

Ken

I worried about this when I weaned my kids off breast milk and I found glass bottles that are built to be sterilised and cope with very high heat. I’ll try find a link for you. You are 100% right to be worried about the plastic as it leaches at high temperatures and is really bad for you.

Sorry I see now that the glass are too heavy! I’ll see if I can find any stainless.

I'm just a bit clumsy with glass too, I'm worried about breaking them, that thick borosilicate glass tends to just explode into thousands of little pieces!

Egglio - They'd be just the job (a bit on the small side but beggars can't be choosers!), but I'm sure my adaptors won't fit 😒, the search continues...

Yes there definitely are as we used to sell them in the shop I worked at. I want to say Nuk?

Another option to look at would be water bottles, a lot of those are stainless steel.

Ken300 · 28/11/2025 11:22

I thought that but they've all either got an internal thread or an external thread that's the wrong size, again 😒

Baby bottles come in two standard screw top sizes where all lids/teats are interchangeable, wide neck is more common these days, Sterifeed look like the narrower one (standard neck seems to be the industry term), though I can't be 100% sure. I don't know how many mm it is, as I no longer have any baby bottles in the house to measure, but from memory, the smaller size is roughly an inch in diameter, whereas larger is probably about 4cm in diameter.

I have a feeling you won't find this unfortunately. The narrow size is considered "old fashioned" whereas the stainless steel is a move away from plastic and an alternative to glass, so it's more modern and aimed at the modern market so would be found in the wide neck size.

You can get adapters which take baby bottles from the newer wide neck size to the old standard neck size, but I'm not sure introducing another adapter which is potentially another source of contamination would be a good idea, would it?

Plastic baby bottles are usually BPA free and designed to handle liquids up to 90C safely, so maybe plastic baby bottles are the best way to go after all? UK guidelines state that formula must be made up with water over 70C, so 50C should be no problem in theory.

The other issue with stainless steel is that it's difficult to see if it's properly clean inside. The DC have SS water bottles and when I put them in the dishwasher sometimes they come out with food residue in, it's easy to see for clear bottles so they can be manually cleaned, but not for the steel ones.

Ken300 · 28/11/2025 12:34

I've just measured the plastic bottles that I've got and they're around 40mm diameter...

I think I might have a solution for you, but it’s a little complex.

https://www.ulula.co.uk/products/pura-kiki-9oz-vacuum-insulated-infant-bottle-aqua-sleeve?currency=GBP&variant=39714013610073&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=1dfe2678dff2&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=21871921849&utm_campaign_name=%7Bcampaignname%7D&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21871921849&gclid=CjwKCAiAraXJBhBJEiwAjz7MZZIAOrLzHIn0o044woSKYolAUpgjnMTAE3rvYcGBvltECP66LDoVOxoCYEUQAvD_BwE

These are 9oz stainless steel baby bottles. According to the Pura website the neck threading is similar enough to that of Philips Avent bottles, such that Pura bottles would be compatible with any breast pump that Avent bottles are.

You can buy pump to bottle adapters to adapt the bottle neck. I use a Medela breast pump and have used sterifeed bottles with it (neck size and threading is the same as Medela bottles so they are compatible). So a Medela (same bottle neck as sterifeed) to Philips Avent (same bottle neck as Pura) adaptor (see link below) should make the Pura bottles compatible with your equipment, if it fits sterifeed necks.

alternatively this is a breast milk storage container rather than a baby bottle, but it connects directly to Medela pumps (same neck as sterifeed) so should be compatible with your equipment.

The Pura bottles are perfect!

They solve another issue that I'm having, if my feed is below 25°c, my stomach has a strop and dumps it's entire contents into my intestines which is really not pleasant, I can warm my feed up to a maximum of 40° but in the winter it cools down quickly and drops below the magic 25° and that Pura bottles is insulated!

Thank you so much...

No problem at all. Sorry you’ve got to deal with all of that, it sounds like a real pain. I hope the Pura bottles prove helpful.
