Help gave some unpasteurised Parmesan to six month old baby

My husband sprinkled a little on the bolognese we gave him for dinner this evening but now I’m reading everywhere that he shouldn’t have had anything unpasteurised til he is at least a year old. What should I do? 😣

Nothing. He'll be fine, honestly.

MaraScottie · 07/11/2025 18:38

He'll be grand

This is peak middle class Mumsnet content 😂

It's fine it's hard cheese. Make sure you're not reading mad US stuff and stick to the NHS sites for advice or you'll drive yourself mad. Give yourself a pat on the back for feeding your baby real food.

😩😩😩😩😩 thanks everyone, I had terrible food anxiety all throughout my pregnancy so can’t believe I was this careless

He’ll be fine. Don’t give it on purpose, though, as it’s too salty for a baby.

This also didn’t occur to me until after he’d eaten it 😔

Hard unpasteurised cheese is fine as it has little moisture. It would get heated a little by the bolognese too.

One of my favourite MN threads of all time was an American poster absolutely freaking out because their 7 year old was given spicy food at a friend’s house and they thought they would get ill, from spice.

Not quite sure if they were capable of thinking the whole thing through Grin

The risk from unpasteurised hard cheese is minuscule- the process of cheesifying the unpasteurised milk makes it safe. Unpasteurised soft cheeses are a much bigger risk.

If cheesifying isn’t a word it should be!!

Don't worry OP; he'll grow up with a fantastic palate.

If it is reassuring, my niece was about the same age sitting on the floor. A spider scuttled post, she grabbed it and crammed the whole thing in her mouth.

She was none the worse for it

I don’t think this counts as carelessness as it’s no risk at all. I would consider whether you might need help for the food anxiety though, as you have a chance still to avoid passing issues on to him and making your life much harder than it needs to be in terms of having a picky eater.

I've had general anxiety for years, and trust me I'm trying my hardest not to pass it on to him :D I had my freak out after he went to bed lol
