Giving up dairy while bfeeding

Has anyone had any experience of this?

My 7 week old dd is very windy and at times quite colicky, and is always bringing up milk (usually small amounts but we've had a couple of projectile vomits of full feeds - nice ).

I think she could have reflux, although not been to the drs about it yet (don't have much faith in them). A friend has suggested that cutting out dairy might help so I was wondering if anyone has tried this and if it makes a difference. Do I have to cut it out completely (will be very hard as a cheese loving vegetarian), or just cut down as much as I can?

I also have a fast let down which I think exacerbates the problem, as she takes on a lot of wind when feeding. I've read other posts on this so I'm trying all the recommended techniques, burping her frequently etc but she is still very sicky.

Any advice much appreciated.

You need to speak to Peachy, from my antenatal thread.
She's given up dairy as her DS (9weeksish) is intolerant.
In fact, she's on the April2008 post-natal thread, why not come and join us?

HI fadingfast, I've just posted a similar thread. Can't help you as I'm in the same boat, but looking forward to reading your replies! - I was wondering about dairy too, especially as dd1 is allergic to it..

I cut it out as ds had reflux and was intolerant. It did help, though ds' reflux was so bad that it did take all the drugs as well to get rid of it.

I discussed the issue a fair bit with the pge and his view was that I had to cut out all dairy, beef and soya or ds would have been better off on the special formula (he was very pro bf btw)

But then it really was very very severe reflux (ftt and burns on the oesophagus ). It's possible that milder cases don't need such an extreme treatment.

But the good news is that ds was sorted within 3 months of starting meds and I was back on dairy by the time he was a year old
