10 month old being referred to dietitian

Hello! I’ve just been to my son’s health visitor for his 9-12 month developmental review and been told he has dropped from the 2nd centile to the 0.4th centile since I was last there (when he was probably around 3/4 months). He’s perfect in every other way developmentally, hitting all his milestones and is very physical during the day so I assume burns a lot of calories. But the weight seems to be a concern.

I was told I am feeding too much breastmilk and not enough food. That my breastmilk is not giving him what he needs nutritionally so I need to stop the night feeds so that he eats more food in the day. However, we were slightly delayed with our weaning journey as he just wasn’t interested and has only started being interested in the last couple of months. He is eating food during the day but he’s still getting used to different tastes and textures and apart from natural yogurt and fruit everything else is a bit hit and miss at the moment. I don’t feel like it’s an appetite issue I think it’s more that he is quite early on in the weaning journey and still getting used to different tastes.

Me and his dad are both quite short and were small babies so not expecting him to be huge but I guess it’s more that he’s dropped centiles/slow to gain.

I just want to know if anyone has been through something similar and what I can expect from the dietitian as I’m feeling a bit anxious now!

thanks in advance!

Were a bit in the short side too Smile

DS had undiagnosed TT and lived mainly off a bit of mush and BM till 12 months.

Happy to report that he isn’t tall but then he’s not not too short either and he’s a great cook and will eat almost everything.

I’fe never heard of a weaning window before.

One thing I was conscious of was introducing him to a bit of spice as we love flavourful food but they do get some taste of what you eat when you’re PG and through your BM anyway Flowers

That is reassuring that your son loves food now as we are foodies and I do hope that my baby will grow to enjoy food. I do eat a lot of flavours and spice as well!

I already have some shelled hemp seeds at home, flaxseeds and have ordered some ground almonds. I’m going to try mixing some 100% peanut butter in with his yoghurt today.

do you happen to know how much of the seeds/almonds is an appropriate amount per day? Not sure how much to mix in and Google has 100 different answers.

Just on how much seeds to add in - if you're using chia, flax or other seeds that swell with moisture soak them first. It'll help prevent constipation as they need a lot of water to pass through the digestive system.

With my little ones I started with a tiny amount, and gradually increased. Stops the new flavour/texture/appearance being off-putting. A small step every day is huge in the grand scheme of things!

There's really no such thing as eating too many nuts / seeds as they don't contain harmful ingredients.

No but Nigella has a great recipe for Almond and cherry loaf for those ground almonds! Grin
