Bottle feeding - how do I change the make of milk?

I have a very hungry three week old who is bottle fed as I couldn't produce enough milk for him. This last week he has had an eye infection and thrush in his mouth but has always had problems going to the toilet! He goes regularly once a day and although it was solid for a while its not any more but he gets very upset for a few hours before he goes to the toilet and strains to go.

I'm thinking of changing his milk to see if this will help but do I have to wean him off one & onto the other and if so over what period of time?

Any other ideas to help his toilet habits would be greatly appreciated as its upsets me to see him so upset over something so simple

Liz, do you give him water?

LizSpain · 05/06/2008 15:47

yes i give him water which i think is what stopped 'them' being solid

I know my SIL changed formula and she just changed directly from one to the other without gradually introducing the second one. If it's any help, her LO was much better on Cow and Gate Comfort than she had been on Aptamil.

We just changed over.

I changed from SMA to Aptamil with DD as she had terrible constipation. I just made a straight switch but started it in the morning so I had all day to see if she reacted badly (she didn't).

Congratulations LizSpain! Where in Spain are you? I had my DS 4 weeks early in Seville at the end of March.
We use nutribén natal and find it fine. Is he otherwise windy? try aerored or blevit digest to help with painful wind

LizSpain · 08/06/2008 12:38

Hi Macaco, i'm near Marbella. I use the nestle nativa, he's not very windy really it just seems to bother him when he goes to the toilet. midwife say it coul just be an immature digestive system so i'll see how he gets on over next week or so

Good luck. How did you get on with the birth in marbella? I had an unexpectedly medicalised birth, but he arrived 4 weeks early, very fast with the cord round his neck so needed ventouse. Found the care very good on the whole though I have to say. Have found these first 2 months hard going though, also had to give up the bfing (mixed feeding) as it just never really took off and I couldn't cope. Been much easier since went to ff.

Oh well i'm glad he arrived safely, I was induced 3 days early due to low fluid levels & labour was extremely quick but hospital was very clean & staff were brilliant I couldn't have asked for more. He's very hungry & I wasn't producing enough milk so had to give up breast feeding but I devastated cause I felt like i'd failed but life is much easier now i'm bottle feeding. He's 4 weeks now & already goes 6 hours at night
