Does my baby have CMPA?

Hi, I have a 4 month old and for the past 3 weeks she has been pooping 5-6 times a day. It started out with the doctor saying she has a sore through so that explained the diaherrea however since then her poop has had mucus and sometimes blood in it (doctor said anal Fissures).

She is absolutely fine otherwise apart from pooping a lot (once in the middle of the night). Wondering whether to wait it out or start her on the cmpa milk? Poop can be sweet smelling. Also is formula fed and stool sample came back ok.

It could be but if she’s happy and content then it seems unlikely. Allergy UK have a list of the symptoms here.

Have you thought of changing her milk or swapping to a Comfort type formula to see if that helps?

Cow’s Milk Allergy

Cow’s milk allergy is an abnormal response by the body’s immune system in which proteins in a food are recognised as a potential threat.

This sounds very much like our baby's symptoms before she was diagnosed with a subtype of CMPA that only affects the gut. Anal fissures are caused by constipation, so wouldn't be fitting with diarrhoea. Our little one had diarrhoea and sweet smelling poo (though haven't seen that as a sign of CMPA before, so that's interesting), then the poo went green, then it started being flecked with blood. The thing that clinched the diagnosis was cutting out all cow milk from my and baby's diet (we are combi feeding) to see the symptoms go away within a couple of days. Then after 2 weeks we started cows milk again and the symptpms came back. After doing that a couple of times with the same pattern of symptoms coming and going in response to cutting out/re-starting cows milk the GP was convinced it was CMPA. But if you try cutting out the cows milk and the symptoms dont go away after few days then it won't be CMPA. Remember that almost all kids grow out of CMPA by aged 1 so even if they do have it you're supposed to try cow milk again every month to check if they've grown out of it. And if you're breastfeeding make sure you take calcium and vitamin D because if you cut out cow's milk you'll get depleted of calcium very fast!

When I say cutting out cows milk from baby's diet I mean switching her formula to Aptamil Pepti 1, and also me stopping all cow milk products in my diet so she didn't get the casein via breast milk either
