Which breast pump is good for daily use?

LO is 7 weeks old and I am starting to express 2 feeds a day. I have the Medela mini electric breast pump which isn't too bad but was wondering if there is anything better out there. It takes me about 30 to 40 minutes to express a feed (5oz) right now which seems a bit long...

I have a Medela Swing and I like it - it works quickly for me (usually get about 4oz out in 15mins), but I think expressing is a really personal thing so my experience of a pump could be very different from yours. There are some reviews of pumps on this site - click on Reviews in the blue bar at the top of the screen

I used both the mini medela and the swing. The swing was definatly better for me, I expressed a lot more a lot quicker.

I had an Ameda Lactaline, which I pumped with 5 days a week for a year when at work. I could pump 250ml in 15 minutes.

I used the Avent hand pump, but I had a strong letdown so no problems getting milk out fast (too fast most of the time).

I use the Avent hand pump too, some days there's loads some days not...it seems to deepend on how relaxed I am and how much I've had to drink (water rather than booze!)

If you are serious about long-term expressing (and my advice is don't be if you can help it as it's a pain in the arse), get a double pump. Like Dibbler I have an Ameda Lactaline and get 8oz or so in 20min on a good day.
However this is because I'm at work and not feeding dd - squeezing expressing sessions in between feeds is very different.

May I, politely, ask why you're expressing two feeds a day so early on?

MrUmble · 05/06/2008 09:35

The Medela Swing is very good, its got a 2 phase action which is supposed to mimic the way your baby feeds.

Not sure if thats true, but it does seem to work better.

mum2oneloudbaby · 05/06/2008 09:55

i tried the medela - hated it and it took aaaaggggeeeesss.

so went back to the tommee tippee closer to nature it was fab and got a 5oz feed in about 10 mins and although it is harder work than an electric one i found it much quicker, more comfortable and quiet so didn't wake the baby!

I'm an Avent fan. I have the Avent Isis IQ Duo for when I'm at work and the Avent Isis IQ Uno for at home and for travelling where the duo is too cumbersome. At the moment I get 6oz in 15 minutes with the Uno.
I never got on with Medela pumps but I think the ones I used in hospital when ds3 was in SCBU had smaller breast shields than the Avent pump which might have been the reason. You can get bigger shields for the Medela ones if you order them specially.
All the Avent pumps are quiet if that needs to be a consideration!

Thanks for the advice. I definitely need something faster! I'm a bit worried that DD may not be getting as much as I think from direct bf so I am just going to express 2 feeds for a while to see what's going on. 1 EBM to be given to her in the afternoon and 1 in the evening that DH can give her. Aside from that I need a little stock anyway but I can only build that up by freezing whatever is left over from her morning feed. Either way I need something faster!

really not sure that expressing can tell you very much about how much your LO is taking from each feed. Better to be guided by her wees, poos, weight and general wellbeing

chipmonkey · 05/06/2008 14:27

Molly, I don't think that sounds like a good idea. It would be very unusual for a pump to be more efficient than a baby, to increase supply you're better to feed directly more often.

witchandchips · 05/06/2008 14:29

my guess is that you are worried about 2 things. 1) how much you are producing and 2) how much your lo is taking.

let down from expressing is very different (can be more or less) so can't tell you very much about 1). Your baby will drink from a bottle in very different ways that she drinks from you so can't tell you very much about 2)

poppy34 · 05/06/2008 14:29

chipmonkey -am assuming that avent pumps work with their steriliser/bottles ?

chipmonkey · 05/06/2008 18:09

Yes Poppy, they do, the steriliser even has little indentations on the shelved for the pump horns to sit into.. They also work with the "Magic cups" as well.

Mollyfloss · 07/06/2008 19:24

I have already given up on this expressing twice a day lark... actually I never really started it. Too much hassle,, I've enough to be doing already... I'm just going to express a little after the morning feed so I have some stock in the freezer. I think I will get the medela swing or ameda lactaline as I still need a better pump...
