7mo baby refusing bottle

Am2025 · 14/10/2025 18:54

Hello! I have been EBF for 7 months and tried introducing a bottle from around 12 weeks but DD has always refused it. We've tried MAM, lansinoh and Phillips Avent but she seems to bite down on the teats instead of sucking. I've tried leaving the house so she doesn't smell me but still refuses.
Any tips or other bottle recommendations? I've been advised some babies just don't take a bottle and to move straight onto a cup or beaker. I've tried this too but I think it'll take some time for her to get a grasp of these. We have a wedding in a few weeks with a no children policy so we are trying to persist with a bottle so we can attend (I'm a bridesmaid).
TIA

I offered a bottle at every feed, it took a couple of weeks, and one day she just took it, a lot of breast milk got poured away, but I just had to persevere, every baby is different though. Can you attend as a bridesmaid and your DH stay in a nearby hotel so you can pop out to feed?

Thanks for your reply! Will continue to offer and persevere. Yes, I think we'll need to make arrangements to pop out for feeds!!

Have you tried a straw cup? My HV said straws were sometimes easier for EBF babies to get the hang of

At 7 months it’s totally appropriate to move on to a sippy cup. You’re gonna get conflicting advice on here lol, but I’d persevere with the cup, given the baby is at that stage of development anyway. Have you asked your health visitor? Has the baby had their 6-9 month review yet? Your HV service might have an infant feeding lead who could help. Well done on preserving with EBF.That’s a commitment for sure! I really hope you have a lovely time at the wedding.

Thanks for your reply! Yeah I've bought a tommee tippee sippy cup to try but at the moment it's more of a toy lol. I'll keep trying with it. Good idea to speak to HV infant feeding team, they've been helpful in the past with bottle refusal so hopefully they have some tips on sippy cups. And thanks so much 🙂

We got advice from a paediatrician to pop a couple of drops of vanilla essence (alcohol free version) in the bottle. we did that in formula and she accepted it. Lansohil bottle and teat flow fast.

FWIW she was a bottle refuser for 8.5 months and this was the only way to get her onto a bottle. We used vanilla essence in her bottles for 5 days and then stopped but she still accepts the bottle. It's been 4 months and she's exclusively bottle fed now and claps for the bottle

That’s amazing @Lala1234567810. I’m ebf my 6mo with no luck with bottle too. She also has two drops of vanilla and is some days having 30ml but I’m persisting. Thank you for post as it is encouraging to know!
OP- I haven’t tried but been advised to try Nesquik or Crusha strawberry or chocolate flavour in the bottle.

At this age a sippy cup or open cup is fine, it doesn’t have to be a bottle. Don’t get hung up on bottles, as long as she is getting some milk & some solids she’ll be fine.

The tommee tippee bottles are the best. Apparently the tommee tippee teats are the closest feeling to a nipple so bf babies have more luck with those. Don't know if it's true but worth a shot
