Getting an 8 week old to take expressed milk - experiences & advice please!

My dd is nearly 8 wks and my dh has arranged a night out for me in a couple of weeks. I have been giving her the odd bottle of expressed BM since about 3 wks but she will only ever drink max 2oz's after a lot of effort on my part. She veers from managing a few gulps to crying and then smiling while playing with the teat!! It takes about 40 mins / 1 hr to get the 2ozs down her & i am doing it when she should be hungry after her lunchtime nap. Is this normal? I'm worried about leaving her for what will be at least 2 feeds away from her...

Jops, what bottles are you using? My ds3 hated Avent and we eventually got him to take these. The latex teat is more breast-like IMO.

sometimes it's better to get someone other than the mother to give the bottle.

How long does a typical bf session last with your dd, btw? Is she a "snacker"?

Jops · 03/06/2008 15:44

Thanks both. i'm using the nuk wide neck bottles with latex teats. they look fairly similar to the playtex ones but i may give those a go. have tried dh giving her the feed and she pretty much does the same thing!! my ds was a nightmare going from breast to bottle at 6 months so i thought by introducing ebm early with dd we would avoid the same problem and she will take some just not very much!

Just saw your second message, chipmonkey. She isn't a snacker tends to feed about 20mins & is happy to go 3 hours between & sometimes longer. She feeds quite fast thought, lots of gulping so i think gets quite a lot in. i tried a faster flow teat today but that just made her gag poor thing!

had the same problem - the only thing that worked was if my husband gave her a bottle and I stayed out of the room, far enough so that she couldn't sense/smell me. Took a few attempts for her to get used to it though

The Playtex teat is suitable to 6 months and my ds4 who is only 4 weeks is fine on it now so might be worth a try? I have a plentiful supply and fast let-down as well.
