CMPA symptoms improved now back again

DD is nearly 5 months and was diagnosed with CMPA at about 7 weeks and put on SMA althera. Symptoms improved initially but the last week or so she seems in so much pain again, screaming and arching her back, only taking enough formula to take the edge off her hunger then refs the rest of the bottle.

We thicken her formula as she also has reflux.

Has anyone experienced recurrence of symptoms? I’m not sure whether it’s possibly a lactose intolerance also. She has terrible smelling wind and always has and gets very upset being burped as though that causes her pain. Is it worth switching formula again or weaning early maybe?

I have a four month old and we've just experienced the same as you (right down to the lethal wind) and he was on also on Sma Althera. I've managed to get him changed to a hypoallergenic milk (puramino) and also had his omeprazole upped too. It's not my first time at this as my eldest also had cmpa and didn't settle until he was on a hypoallergenic milk.

I'd definitely try the hypoallergenic formula. From what I read lactose intolerant is incredibly uncommon in babies.

Thanks, I’ll speak to the doctor on Monday about trying a hypoallergenic formula. Did you DS have any other symptoms? DD doesn’t have a rash or anything like that but she’s my third baby and I can just tell from the kind of cry/scream and the way she’s going rigid and arching her back that she’s in pain again.

You can find that they tolerate an extensively hydrolysed formula for a while but the proteins from the broken down dairy builds up and they can start to react to it. You want to ask for an amino acid formula such as puramino, neocate or alfamino.

They might need their reflux meds adjusted and omperazole alongside the gaviscon might help with symptoms.

My daughter has both allergies and reflux and we often had to tackle both together and the reflux was made worse by allergies and it was hard to see allergy symptoms when her reflux wasn't managed

Neither of mine had a lot of rashes (my eldest did when we introduced dairy during weaning) but would occasionally break out in red blotches. They both also swung from being constipated to liquid poo, full of mucus, silent reflux symptoms and very fussy during feeding. As said above both their reflux symptoms were caused by the cmpa. And like upi said, their cry was also one of pain when they would go rigid.
