Hi

Have had thrush for about 3, possibly 4, weeks now. Clotrimazole did not work (had that for 3 weeks). Have been using daktarin for 5 days and nipples, ds's bum (he has rash diagnosed by doc as thrush)and mouth (no signs of thrush at all) with only a very mild improvement.

Although not massively painful, my nipples very pink and rash still very prominent on ds's bum - have 6 wk check on wednesday and feel I should push for fluconazole (sp?) as am terrified this will get worse and have worked so dam hard to bf. Just feel very tender and have some mild needley/shooting sensations after feeding in nipple.

Would you push for this treatment too? Anyone else had this and bloomin sick of applying cream all the time?

All support appreciated.... thanks all.

Tanalbit can be helpful, though it is very pricey.

scorpio1 · 02/06/2008 18:10

munchkinmum · 02/06/2008 18:12

scorpio - it took that long to go?

It is a dietary supplement with something called zinc tannates and lotus rhizome extract. It was recommended to a friend by a nutritionist, it is supposed to flush the thrush out of your system. Will look for a link.

constancereader · 02/06/2008 18:18

tanalbit

it is very expensive

VictorianSqualor · 02/06/2008 18:29

Push for the fluc.
I got rid of it in a bout a week with two tablets of fluc 150mg each, one one day, then one 24hours later (these size can be bought over the counter I think).
And put daktarin oral gel on my nips and his mouth after every feed.

munchkinmum · 02/06/2008 19:06

VS how bad did you have it? Can you describe?

UPDATE

Went to docs y'day re the thrush situation. She is sure that we longer have thrush after 2 differnt treatments. However, my nipples still a bit pink and tender and ds's bum sore.

She gave us nappy rash cream for ds as she thinks he is left with residual sore skin but thrush gone. Already, he looks better .

Thinking about it, I have to work hard to get a good latch sometimes and this might be making me tender. I also feel that ds's latch slips when he is fuller which means I get some rubbing that could be the main reason for tenderness. When this happens I break the latch and try to re-latch better. I did this this morning and when I took him off, he fell fast asleep and has slept well for ages.

Have I got a greedy boy that doesnt want to let go at the end of a feed? Any other experiences of this? I know he is doing ok, he has put on loads of weight and feeds ok with care and effort but this issue is doing my head in! I guess I am craving normal feeling nips!!

All cooments appreciated!

I got thrush alot with DS1 and 2 and we saw a doctor with ds1 who suggested I took a course of fluconzine (or something like that Canesten once capsule)
I took it and within 48 hours it started to clear.
after that I didn't go back to the GP I just bought it over the counter at tesco.

scorpio1 · 05/06/2008 12:44

maybe try getting him off when oyu think he has finished, he may be comfort sucking not feeding iyswim.

My update - HV (new one) is meeting with my gp's next week to advise them to prescribe fluc. She gave me the BFN leaflet too and seemed very switched on.

Keep an eye on oyur nipples and baby mouth - it creeps up very fast.

solo · 05/06/2008 12:47

Have you tried the 50/50 vinegar/water wash on your nipples after each feed followed by applying clotrimazole cream once they've dried? it worked for me also with the internal breast thrush. Soak cotton wool pads in the mixture and keep in a sealed zip lock bag and throw pads away after use. They are easily transportable like this, so can be popped in the nappy bag/hand bag/kept by your bed/in the bathroom.

munchkinmum · 05/06/2008 12:57

Thanks - but I don't think that I have thrush (it's cleared up) and maybe I just have issues with attachment when ds gets a bit lazy...

Will try to take him off as soon as I feel uncomforable.

Anyone else got this problem??

If it's soreness you have, I found the Silverettes worked well and quickly. Only worked when I was sore and cracked though, but are well worth the cost, which was reduced considerably when I bought mine a couple of months ago.
