Advice - 7 week old Colic & Silent Reflux

After some advice

I have a 7 week old baby who originally we took to the Dr's as he was in so much pain trying to pass wind which has ended up him going on prescription milk as they believe he has an allergy (He was was on Kendamil to start with and then we moved him on to Kendamil Comfort ) Even before the prescription milk he wouldn't go down in his moses to sleep he would last 10 minutes and wake up screaming. The only way he will sleep is either ony myself or my husband. We have tried elevating the moses basket but this hasn't helped at all. The doctor believes he has colic & silent reflux. He is on prescription milk and they have just prescribed Gaviscon. This hasn't stopped him being sick, displaying pain signs when feeding and when we try to wind him he screams and we still can't lay him down to sleep. 7 weeks of my husband and myself doing shift work at night time is starting to get to us mentally. Does anyone have any advice what to do going forward ... Do we need to change formula (this would be the 4th time and he is only 7 weeks) Do we need to change bottles? (Currently on MAM anti colic)

I’ve been there and I feel your pain. It doesn’t seem like it now but it will get better.

The only thing that worked for us was omeprazole. Both of mine were different babies almost immediately. I’d also recommend contacting your local sling library and get their advice on a suitable sling. Mine both settled in an upright position and it meant I could get a bit done.

I feel so trapped and I feel like I'm not enjoying my baby which makes me feel such a bad mum so I'm desperate to get this sorted 😔

I have been told to trial the gaviscon for 1 week and go back to them if it doesn't help so maybe I will mention the omeprazole if there is no change - Thank you :)

Turn it on its head and say you’re advocating for your baby and getting this horrible issue fixed so that he’s going to be a happy little fella, so you’re obviously a good mum!
The sling helped me get a bit of freedom. I never imagined myself as a sling mummy but it just allowed me walk to the shop or make a sandwich. That helped me feel like I wasn’t suffocating in 4 walls.
We were told to give Gaviscon a week but it made ours constipated so we went back to the GP after 3 days. Be a bit pushy and make it clear what a detrimental effect this is having on your mental health.
You’ll get there.

That is how I feel - I never want to leave home as I don't know what baby I will be getting :(

I'm going to look into the sling for sure! I can't even go to the toilet let alone make myself food or a drink when my husband leaves for work and it's just me and the baby - I just can't bear to listen to him scream :( So maybe the sling will be a turning point for me.

Perhaps I will give it a few more days and push for the omeprazole before the weekend arrives

Thank you again so much for the advice :)

Edited

I had a reflux and allergy baby and she was in my arms permanently.
When you partner is still around, or get him to do it, prepare your breakfast and lunch. Cereal already in the bowl so you just have to add the milk should be ok to eat one handed. Make a packed lunch or a leftovers that can be eaten cold -pasta salad etc. I ate a lot of cereal bars and various things on toast as I could manage to make those one handed or slowly with lots of put down/pick ups

I spent the day pacing with her and found the iron board the perfect height table and made life easier. Making a brew involved picking her up and putting her down about 8 times. Large thermos flask meant I didn't have to do it too often

For my daughter it was a combination of multiple food allergies and severe silent reflux and needed her allergens removing from my diet, later alfamino formula, as well as high dose omperazole, gaviscon and eventually domperidone too

How are things @MagicOrange1.

Another hard day :(

We went to the doctor's and they have prescribed omeprazole which we will start tomorrow as I wasn't too sure if I was supposed to give the 3mls in one go or spread over all his feeds. I contacted the pharmacist who said it's better to give the omeprazole in one go?

Feeling hopeful as heard really good things about the omeprazole but I was told he could only be on it for 4 weeks and couldn't continue it after if it worked? and that if it doesn't work or if it returns when he stops it then they would do a hospital referral

I was told when we started omperazole that she'd be on it for 6 weeks and then we would try her without it ... Never happened her dose was increased during that time instead.
I was also told they would stop increasing the dose with the weight and that would allow her to wean off it .... She's still on it aged 5! Although we do go through periods where it doesn't need weight adjusting
Don't worry about the "plan" for now, give it as prescribed and hope it helps!

SisterMaryImmaculate · 12/09/2025 20:59

Sorry to hear that.
Try to give the omeprazole on an empty stomach before baby’s first feed of the day. Is it the medicine or the weird tablets? Either way just syringe it straight into baby’s cheek and blow gently on their face as it triggers their swallow reflex.
As PP said, don’t worry about the plan. It’ll work itself out.

Thank you :)

I'm always thinking 10 steps ahead I just hope it works and then I can take it from there

It's the liquid we have been given. Thanks for the advice ... Here is hoping it works 😊🤞
