My 2-week old is feeding for ages

Hi, just wanted to check to make sure this is normal. My 2-week-old daughter is breastfeeding for an hour and a half at a time, sometimes longer. She will latch on fine to one breast and not look up for 45 minutes! i am stopping between breasts or whenever she needs it to wind her, etc., and sometimes she will doze a bit and need to be woken up, but for the most part she is sucking away the whole time. Is this typical? She usuallly goes 2-3 hours between feeds, sometimes longer at night, apart from the odd bit of cluster feeding in the evenings. Just wondering if I am doing this right? It seems like a long time to be feeding.

Sounds bout right to me they get quicker as the weeks go on.

Really? Okay, thanks... maybe she's just not that efficient yet. She is pretty new!

they feed for ages when they are new, they need to build up the supply and things. It can feel endless but it does settle down. It's a relief when the feeds get shorter. It will happen!

looking forward to that day, then. Feel like a walking milk bar.

I'm about to have my second so have been looking through my diary to see if my recollection that I did nothing but feed bears up to scrutiny. As an example (day 9):
00.50 - 25 mins
04.30 - 35 mins, change, 15 mins
08.40 - 40 mins
12.15 - 25 mins
12.50 - 20 mins
17.00 - 45 mins
18.10 - 35 mins
19.30 - 20 mins
20.35 - 25 mins
21.00 - 25 mins
22.45 - 20 mins
Totals less than 1 hour feeding in every 4 but it didn't feel like that at the time - it felt like ALWAYS! Things definitely got better (with periodic regressions for growth spurts) but it's hard to say how much this was because the intensity lessened and how much was because I chilled out and learned to just respond to what she needed without freaking out over how long / how soon / when will this end etc etc.

ah, that's good to hear. i am slowly becoming more zen about the feeding thing. Basically, this is just what you do, right? And before long, they are going off to school...

I was shocked at how long my DS fed for to begin with, it felt like hours and hours! They definately get more efficient, my DS sometimes feeds for just 5 mins now but is like a Dyson for those 5 mins!

Block out you diary for the first six weeks or so as "feed baby"... after that they do space it out a bit more.

EffiePerine · 02/06/2008 08:32

yes, completely normal.

Congratulations on your new baby
