Sore nipples

Hi all, I gave birth on Saturday to a little girl. So far milk has just started to come in properly last night. Midwives have checked feeding technique and said they’re very happy with it, no issues and latch is good too.
However, I’m on day 4 of BF and my nipples are so sore when she is feeding, they’re not coming out a funny shape and not cracked or bleeding (yet!) but when she first latches on it can be very stingy. Is this something that will ease in time or is there anything else I can do to help? I’ve ordered some Lanisoah cream and hoping that may help. I’ve also tried various feeding positions but it’s the same whichever one she’s in.

Midwife in my hospital had these and they are hands down the best

you put them in the fridge so the lot are cooling and also they moisturise and help the nipple to heal. It does get less painful as your skin adjusts to the new level of activity!

edited as I forgot to say they are big so I cut one in half and use a half on each nipple!

I found the lansinoh nipple cream helpful.

I also found it better to make sure they properly dried after each feed. So rather than putting my bra straight back up, a proper (but gentle) wipe with a muslin and (if at home) being topless for just like 5-10 mins. I only needed to do this for a couple of days before my nipples got more used to it, I wasn’t topless for months on end.

But you say your nipple is a funny shape after she feeds? If it flat/lipstick shaped? That can be a sign of a poor latch - do you have any breastfeeding groups nearby?

Everyone says breastfeeding doesn’t hurt if you’re doing it right but my experience both times is that it does hurt when they first latch for the first week or ten days when your nipples are getting used to it, even if your latch and everything is good. I fed my first baby for a good long time and by the time I stopped, it was so easy (and had been for months and months) that I forgot how hard it is at first and it was a shock when I had my second. If your latch and everything is okay then it might just be your nipples needing to toughen up and get accustomed to things!

Thank you, I’ll try the ‘air drying’ for a little while too.
No, the nipples aren’t coming out a funny shape at all.

Thanks, I was hoping someone would say this. I figured it might be the case with all the sudden new ‘activity’ on them! Nice to have a bit of a time scale of when to expect it to ease a little, thank you, I’ll just try and give it a bit longer.

Sorry, I misread your OP! Just saw the words funny shape.

In that case, it’s probably a case of protecting your nipples while they get used to it, (like wearing in new shoes) cream, drying, and the compresses PP suggested.
