6mth old projectile vomiting after formula in baby rice

Hello. Am new to this so forgive me for not using all the clever abbreviations. Promise I will get the hang of it! My daughter, healthy, good weight has been exclusively breastfed since birth except for a fortnight of one bottle of formula a day when we had thrush when she was 6 weeks old. She was fine taking the bottle and formula then. However, she has now started solids, and I am wanting to use formula for her baby rice and perhaps the lunchtime feed but each time we have tried, she has been incredibly sick - literally projectile and it lasts for an hour or more until literally there is nothing left for her to be sick. So then, I followed Annabel Karmel's book and saw that I could use full cows milk, so tried that in her rice this morning, and the same thing happened! She then sleeps and wakes up and within 24 hrs is fine! Because she was fine before with formula we assumed it couldn't be that, but could it be? And what would be in cows milk too? She won't take the bottle at the mo, so the formula/cows milk has always been mixed with the baby rice. Any ideas? I would guess intolerance or allergy would have shown itself when she was 6 weeks old? Thanks for all advice. Docs can't determine it so needed your help!

I would just express some breastmilk straight into her cereal bowl for now.

DD was mix fed and fine until we started weaning. She was diagnosed with a milk protein intolerance at the age of ten months, so don't discount that entirely. Maybe mention it to your GP and see what he/she thinks.

On a lighter note - I think I'd projectile vomit if someone fed me baby rice - it tastes like wall paper paste (not that I eat wall paper paste you understand).

agree with hercules, whatever is going on, switching to using b/milk in food sounds like a jolly good idea.

TinkerbellesMum · 29/05/2008 16:44

Don't worry about the abbreciations, people do it to type faster, it's not essential

How old is your daughter?

TinkerbellesMum · 29/05/2008 16:46

Sorry, should have read the title too.

Throw the rice to the back of the cupboard and give her what you're eating! There is no need to puree feed a child over six months, they're quite capable of self feeding and can do a better job of regulating their intake than we can do for them.

I buy the Organix cereals for DS (6 months) and he loves them. You can mix them up with water rather than milk and they still taste pretty good (well, as good as baby food gets). Would save you having to express and would get round the formula/milk problem.

Hi everyone, Thanks so much for your comments. I think the expressing of breast milk for now is a good idea and I will have a chat to my GP. Lolaladybird, What is the organix cereal called? (forgive me if it's called 'organix cereal'!) as that sounds like a good idea. She loves solid food, and is on lots of veg and fruit and is happy with textured purees but she hasn't got the hang of picking something up off her tray and putting it into her mouth yet. Tinkerbellesmum - did you just keep putting food on her tray and she got the hang of it? As that's what my plan was. Oh and she always eats with us at the table so she sees us eating and gets the hint. Has anyone put breastmilk in a beaker if they couldn't be there for a feed (I mean occasionally as I need to go into work for a day soon). Thanks again. I feel so much better already!

Tink only ever ate what we did. We just cut some things differently so she could hold it and left it for her. It took about a week to get the idea of it and by seven months she was able to eat anything with her hands. It varies how long it takes different babies, but you can't push them beyond their abilities and that means that if they are slower than others then they're not ready.

Check out Aitch's site.

"Just say no" to baby rice - surprised it doens't make every baby vomit .

Just give her veg - squished or mashed whichever you fancy.

Fidgetsmum · 30/05/2008 22:35

Well, I put some cooked carrot in front of her at teatime today, and off she went! Most of it ended up on the floor but a bit went in. And then for pudding instead of mashing banana, I just put it in front of her. She needed a bit of help holding it as it got slippery, but she ate it. And I didn't panic about her choking either! NO MORE BABY RICE! EVER!

Glad the finger food is working out Fidget - think I'll try that with DS who is 6 mo. Will make a change from pureeing - just don't seem to have the time for it like I did with DD (PFB).

Organix do a range of foods for babies and toddlers and they're really easy to get hold of - Tesco, Sainsbury etc. DS loves the Raspberry one and Fig & Apple. They also do really nice fruit puddings in pots which are handy for taking out and about (no fiddling with tupperware pots!).

TinkerbellesMum · 31/05/2008 20:43

I never bothered with tupperware or buying special food. I just got her stuff when I ate, I could always find something to give her.

Glad to here it's going well. It so much easier when you stop (or don't bother) pureeing.
