COLIC baby HELP

BS222 · 04/08/2025 22:16

I’m a first time mum to a 16 day old baby boy. We think he has colic as around 4pm-12am he is very uncomfortable- kicks his legs and is constantly lifting them up, straining, screaming and crying excessively and it takes around 2 hours when he’s at his worst to settle him. For the first week this only happened twice, but it seems to be everyday now. Weve tried a warm bath, swaddling, White noise, turning the lights on, lights off, sensory lights, infacol, dentinox, baby swing, skin to skin, rocking chair, bicycle legs, massages ect. I also pace feed and sit him upright for around 20 minutes after every feed as he gulps it down like he’s never been fed so trying to avoid this to help his trapped wind/colic. As it takes around 2 ish hours to settle him and get him to sleep, he is then due a bottle (formula). My question is do I wait for him to wake or do I wake him for his feed. I don’t want to disturb him as he must be exhausted from screaming but then I also don’t want to leave him too long for a feed. Any help would be appreciated ❤️

Forgot to say, he goes 3 hours on the dot for his feeds, so with it taking so long to settle him he falls asleep just as he’s due a bottle. Do I wake him after 4 hours or leave him to wake himself (sorry if this makes no sense)

This was me 22 years ago. My DS had it so bad. I went to a cranial osteopath and it was amazing. I’m very cynical sometimes but this person was sent from god. The midwife recommended it after the doctor just told me if I had a pound for every mother that had been on here with a colic baby….blah blah blah …. No help whatsoever. It was expensive but worth every penny to me.

I’m sorry, my daughter went through exactly what you’re describing, it took months and months to identify the cause, I will tell you but please know every baby is different so I’m sorry if it’s irrelevant to you.

we started using infacol with every bottle, she was on aptamil for reference. We thought infacol helped a little but still didn’t fix the issue, we started using gripe water along side this, didn’t really see much difference. At around 2 months I queried milk allergy as she was clearly in pain and discomfort, she also had reflux so the gp prescribed gaviscon and a dairy free formula, she screamed non stop for 24 hours so I put her back on aptamil, after a few more weeks I got back in touch with gp who said the milk they prescribed still had some dairy in it as goes in stages, they prescribed another one and since then it’s been bliss

I’ve been wondering if it could be a milk allergy, but he’s only ever been sick once (id put the swing on a bit too fast after he’d had 4oz of milk🤣) and he’s such an angel in the day it’s just evenings. Was your daughter the same? Thank you for your reply ❤️

My daughter wasn’t really being sick until she was a few months so perhaps you can still mention it to your HV or GP? Yes she was perfect in the day, only woke every 3/4 hours for a bottle and right back to sleep. She was like this until around 4pm and then she would cry, grunt, kicking legs and straining exactly how you described, she did this pretty much all night really, from newborn her bedtime was 5am and gradually got earlier, once we started the new milk everything just fell into place and I actually kicked myself for not going back to the GP sooner. Also don’t know how your preparing your bottles but we had tommee yippee perfect prep and also found this made it worse too.

Thank you for this, will definitely question this with HV. I’ve tried all sorts for making up bottles. I’ve just bought one of those temperature kettle things where you can chose the temperature your water boils to as he doesn’t give us much time to make the bottles up before he’s crying. We have to have alarms set about 15 mins before he’s due so his bottles ready on the 3 hour mark to get to him just as he wakes. So we make them as we need them in the day. I know this isn’t recommended but I’m pre making feeds at night and storing them in the fridge, then using the Inoby bottle warmer to take the chill off. This is what works for us now as ive made myself ill stressing over whats right or wrong.

Yes do what whatever works for you and baby, don’t stress over it, if it works it works. Plenty of people do it that way and there’s no issue. I used the rapid cool and loved it but some hate it, it’s just trial and error. I really hope things settle for you soon I remember what it was like. You’re doing well xx

I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I really hope you do!! I completely forgot about this thread and your reply unril today. My boy was prescribed carobel for thickener but as he’s grown and been having more milk per feed he has gotten much worse and it doesn’t seem to be helping anymore. I am so annoyed that I forgot about this post because the past few months have been awful with feeding and constant crying and him being in pain. The GP has recommended little and often feeds still with carobel to help with reflux and he seems no better, he screams through feeding and burping and it’s awful to see him so uncomfortable, and feeding every 2 hours is just not worth him being in pain/ I’m just asking which milk has helped your little girl, I’m going to try one tomorrow but not sure which to look at or chose! Thanks so much if you see this ❤️

Of course, in my moment of need I wish I had someone to help! Thank god for that I’m so happy they have, I had extra tins of CMPA milk here I was going to offer you if they didn’t prescribe. I really hope it helps and works, if not keep going back to the gp. I think they prescribed 3 different milks before one actually worked and had gaviscon and Movicol along side too so just keep pushing. When she was that young I found it so hard, she was so unhappy and in pain, now she’s 1.5 and such a happy girl and she’s nearly built up her dairy intolerance - not saying this to gloat but to give you hope that it does get better just hold tight

Honestly can’t thank you enough!! Im annoyed at myself for forgetting about your reply🤣🤣🤣🤣 he’s the exact same, he cries in pain 80% of the time he’s awake I feel so bad too. Because he’s in pain in the day he doesn’t get enough sleep from being uncomfortable so then he’s overtired and continues screaming is such a horrible cycle. Will let you know how the milk goes, the drs have been really good to be honest just wish they had tried this sooner!
