dd lmost year on sm chav at the mo, she only has about 3 bottles a day, eats v well

what do you do?

lulumama · 28/05/2008 14:27

sm chav? eh?

i would switch to cows milk at a year, it is far cheaper and there is no need for her to have formula.

nickytwotimes · 28/05/2008 14:28

I switched to whole milk at 1. You can do half and half for a bit first to let lo get used to the change.

questionmaster · 28/05/2008 14:31

suppsoe im just worried about making sure she is getting all the vitamins she needs
even though she eats well.

nicky, did it save a lot of money?

what about the expirary dates, does cows milk really keep for sveral days in a fit state for a baby?

plenty of folks call it sm cahv lulu, round my way we do anyhow!

OK - so how do I do this, by half and half do you mean one formula bottle and one cow's milk bottle a day?

HV told me to water the cow's milk down with water at first and give it to dd during the day.

I've not been brave enough to do either yet!

lulumama · 28/05/2008 14:33

ok,i thought it was a weird typo... anyhoo, i just switched without any preamble, just swapped straight over. no reason to suspect it would be an issue as used cows milk in cooking from 6 months etc..

if eating a good varied diet, then it is not an issue

questionmaster · 28/05/2008 14:33

hi jnny thats how i feel, unsure of giving it to dd.

why would you water own the cows milk

what sort of cows milk do you give fullfat?

OP posts:
Pinkjenny · 28/05/2008 14:34

Lulu, am worried it might upset her tummy? Although I know she can't have formula forever of course!

What if she doesn't like it?

I know, I know, I worry too much. But once I overcome all these hurdles I move on without any fuss.

nickytwotimes · 28/05/2008 14:35

I mixed, say, 4 oz of formula with 4oz of whole milk for a few feeds a day and built up from there so the shock of a new taste wasn't off putting, lol!

I though it would be lots cheaper but ds loves cows m,ilk and drinks way more of it than he ever did formula so it's not much less cash but far easier than making up formula all the time.

if you're worried about milk going off, just but 1 or 2 pints to begin with. It wasn't long before we were buying the big 6 pnters, tbh.

nickytwotimes · 28/05/2008 14:36

Full fat. Blue top, usually.

lulumama · 28/05/2008 14:36

has she reacted ok to dairy..cheese , yoghurt, milk in cooking?

i would use full fat organic, i get it delivered so it is fresh every morning

although the 4 pint ones from the supermarket last well. never had a problem

lidl sells organic milk now

questionmaster · 28/05/2008 14:37

lulu why do i feel nervus of giving it to dd, shes had cows milk before in her fish pie

while we are on the subject, when should dd not have a bottle anymore? she likes it for a snuggle

OP posts:
questionmaster · 28/05/2008 14:40

why organic? dd is fine with chesee etc.

how long do you think cows milk keeps for?

does everyone wait till, their dcs are 1 year exactley? is it bad to give cows milk at say 11 months ?

OP posts:
lulumama · 28/05/2008 14:41

i don;t know!! remind yourself that formula is modified cows milk. that should help

i would not be in a hurry to get her off her bottle if it is a comfort for her, but not good to let her go to sleep with it as it is bad for her teeth.

Jojay · 28/05/2008 14:43

Has she had cows milk on cereal? Might be a good way to get her used to the taste if you think that might be an issue.

My DS had cows milk on cereal from 6 momths so I just swapped him over at 1, with no hassle at all.

Ideally she should be off a bottle by 1, but lots of people carry on a bit longer. It's not so good for their teeth to continue with a bottle for too long, I think.

If she uses a sippy cup for water etc during the day, then it shouldn't be a problem. You can still have a nice cuddle while you're doing it!

lulumama · 28/05/2008 14:43

i prefer organic milk, less yuk in it. do a search on here

wold not be harmful IMO to give it at 11 months., we did that with DS as we were going abroad when he was one.

in the fridge, it keeps a good 3 days or so, but you will easily get through it

Pinkjenny · 28/05/2008 14:44

She's fine with yoghurt and cheese, will be brave and do it!

Jojay · 28/05/2008 14:45

And I gave my DS cows milk at 11 months too - we were going away and it was so much easier to manage.

He ate well anyway, so I wasn't worried about the nutrients.

I use full fat organic too - I believe organic milk is supposed to have a higher nutritional value than non organic

questionmaster · 28/05/2008 14:48

pink jenny how olds your dc?

do you get cows milk in spain?

OP posts:
Pinkjenny · 28/05/2008 14:56

She was 1yo on 17th May. TBH one of the reasons I haven't given it to her is that we are going on holiday soon and I wasn't sure about giving her cow's milk in another country.

(as I typed that, I realised how paranoid it sounded)

lulumama · 28/05/2008 14:57

the cows milk in spain, where we stay anyway, seems very different to english milk, seemed to taste different and go sour a lot quicker, so gave DD longlife.

no harm to take a box of formula with you if you are not confident about it or don;t want to go out every day to buy milk

questionmaster · 28/05/2008 14:58

awww did she had a good bday?
what did you get her?
did she have a party?

yes ikwum
its even more worring giving cows milk abroad!!

OP posts:
Pinkjenny · 28/05/2008 15:00

Oh lordy, maybe I'll just stick to my original plan and change her to cows milk when we get back.

She had a lovely birthday thanks, and got lots of plastic crap toys that are anow taking over the living room. She had a big party at home with all her friends and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

lulumama · 28/05/2008 15:02

i can see why you are called questionmaster!!

do what you feel is right, you cannot do any harm keeping her on formula until after hols

i would take formula with you, as they sell different brands abroad

questionmaster · 28/05/2008 15:04

lol lulu,

should be question asker really !!
