Breastfeeding on long car journeys

How is it done? MW at parentcraft said you could do it when someone else is driving (obviously!) but isn't this like totally dangerous and illegal?
Problem is that DH and I regularly do a 6 hour journey and with bfing I can see it becoming 9, 10 hours...

Plan your journey so you can have a feed break. Theres always somewhere you can stop for a break.

You could try taking along some expressed milk so that stops don't have to be quite so frequent..a lot easier to give a bottle to a baby in its seat than leaning over (which I too have done in a traffic jam). Maybe not practical in first month or so but after that it could be a good solution.

no, DA, I was going to say that too, the lo should be getting a break from the car seat after a couple of hours.

I have found that the motion of the car sends the baby to sleep so they only wake up if genuinely hungry, rather than to comfort suck.

After a couple of nightmare journeys we have recently tried travelling in the evening instead of the day. It was a lot easier - we left after bathing and breastfeeding baby who fell asleep fairly easily and stayed asleep for most of the way (he's not the best sleeper). The roads were a lot quieter as well so the journey was a lot less stressful. My DS is one by the way.

I was just about to suggest leaving at bedtime. This is something we have done a few times and it works well for us. You can still stop for pee breaks etc, just take turns staying in the car with sleeping baby
