Boobs suddenly feeling full at 9 months?

Hello,

We're almost 9 months into breastfeeding but, recently, my boobs have been feeling a lot fuller and I'm concerned that DD isn't feeding enough.

I haven't actually noticed a reduction in the number of feeds and she still wakes up at least twice in the night and feeds back to sleep so I am slightly confused by it. If I try to feed her just because my boobs feel full, she'll refuse and arch away crying.

She's on two meals a day right now, going up to three in about a week, and she eats a good amount. I am aware that she's still supposed to be having mostly milk though.

I don't want to force it, but I'm not sure what to do? She drinks water from a straw cup, but refuses expressed milk from the same cup so that's not an option. She's never taken a bottle either.

Any advice appreciated!

I thought that the more a baby feeds, the more milk is produced, so perhaps she is having as much as she needs.

I wouldn’t worry about it. It does sound as though she’s naturally refucing her milk feeds, which is fine at 9 months and is probably ready for more solids.

If she were FF then the advice would be 400 ml a day by 10 months so taking a bit less at 9 months is perfectly acceptable Smile

Sorry I meant to link this guide to feeding in the first year and didn’t 🤦‍♀️

Could it be the warmer weather? I noticed a bit of a change in supply when it got hot… wouldn’t worry though, all sounds like you’re doing fab and she’s fine. No harm in offering if it’s hot as a drink… but I’m sure it will also settle down too.

She's taking what she needs. They should gradually drop milk feeds in favour of food. The whole "milk before 1 is just for fun" is actually not true. When they're 12 months they should be having 3 meals and some snacks a day, most calories should be from solid food. That doesn't happen overnight! 9 months is around the time my baby dropped some milk feeds too.
