Help- stopped BF two weeks ago, now hard, painful lumps in breast

I suspect I have some blocked ducts. I don't feel fluey or generally unwell but have three large hard lumps that are really tender and the pain is beginning to radiate out up my neck and shoulder.

I have tried hot flannels and massage and managed to hand express a small amount but the lumps didn't shift. I also had a quick go with the hand pump but didn't produce much milk and am worried that too much stimulation probably isn't the answer.

I'm really worried that this might develop into mastitis if I don't address it. Plus the pain is getting worse. I can only find advice on how to deal with blockages while still BF (i.e. using baby to unblock)- how do I do it without?

I only know about hot flannels and massaging towards the nipple, or you could try combing your boob (yes with a hair comb) whilst in the shower.

I think taking lecithin capsules can help as well, but would imagine that's more preventative than solution.

I only ever had blockages when I was feeding DD and used her as a pump as well, but I know how painful they can be.

I hope you get some more useful advice soon.

You could also try cold cabbage leaves, as described here. Basically you put a cold cabbage leaf (straight from the fridge) inside your bra for about 20 minutes. It sounds (and smells ) a little funny, but works really well for engorgement.

thanks
will try cabbages again - did work a bit with early engorgement.

it's so tempting to put DD to the breast one last time (especially as am feeling sad about giving up) but the poor thing would be very confused- plus I imagine the milk may be quite unpleasant if it has been sitting round for days!
