Unbearable bottle times

My child is now 6 weeks old and feeding times are getting worse due to a couple of things;
baby has a lip tie which causes a weak bottle latch - anyone familiar with this?
trying to change from MAM 0 teat to 1 but guzzles and then gets trapped air which is then painful and causing screaming

anyone have any recommendations, advice or experience please?

What position are you holding the baby in?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 27/06/2025 05:47

If he’s happy on 0 why are you changing?

are you getting the tie cut?

We have been shown how to pace feed so baby is sat upright with bottle horizontal to the floor.
sorry I forgot to mention, we have only changed teats following baby’s cues, she was suckling too hard for the milk which caused her to fall asleep halfway through a bottle and become upset 10 minutes later for more milk.
we have tried to reintroduce the 0 but she is completely not interested and spits it out.

Are you getting the lip tie divided @C202? It’s very unusual for a lip tie to be present without a Tongue Tie also be present. Have you seen a Tongue Tie Practitioner?

We have looked into it but the only place that does this is in London which is quite some travel for us, especially in the summer weather.
HV has tried to see if there is a tongue tie too but said they couldn’t tell.
Maybe I just need to get a private consultation to see if there is a tongue tie too as NHS have an 8 week waiting list just to see if we are accepted/declined.

HV is very unlikely to be able to spot TT, unless you have an exceptional one.

There are some that do virtual consultations, like Milk Matters Flowers

Thank you, I will reach out for her tongue to be checked too.

We found pace feeding was disastrous - made her extra windy and frustrated. It turns out it’s intended for premature babies rather than term ones!

It worked better to keep the teat full of milk (so don’t hold the bottle horizontal) but keeping the baby fairly upright. Don’t keep pausing the feed unless they want you to - the artificial pausing was making mine gulp furiously as she thought the bottle would be removed. Basically follow the baby’s cues.

C202 · 27/06/2025 10:05

@RidingMyBike This makes sense actually as when we have been removing the bottle, she then furiously starts moving her head looking for the teat, and as soon as the bottle is back in her mouth she takes a massive gulp of milk along with some air and you can hear it hit her stomach and can almost count down to the scream.
Thank you for this, I will give this a go next feed.

Good luck! I found the paced feeding advice so strange, it was very prevalent in breastfeeding circles, but seemed the opposite all I’d been told about feeding on demand and following their cues as it involves removing the bottle arbitrarily and the adult trying to control the milk flow.
Feeds worked much better when I ignored pace feeding advice and followed what my baby wanted. THEN I discovered it was never even meant to be used with babies that aren’t really premature!
