Heat Rash or CMPA?

Our little one developed a rash all over her body 4 weeks ago, drs referred us to urgent care and it was determined it was a viral rash. Ever since the rash hasn’t fully disappeared and still remains across her shoulders, chest and has now spread behind her ears, neck and onto her scalp.

She has suffered with baby acne from day 3 and also has reflux to the point where she ‘chokes’ and ends up gasping for air. We’ve tried carobel, gaviscon and now we’re trialling omeprazole. Drs aren’t interesting in even trying to rule out cmpa and are telling me it’s heat rash.

Our latest appointment I asked to trial prescription milk due to multiple symptoms of cmpa such as the reflux, rash, sneezing, hiccups after every feed, terrible gas aswell as an absurd amount of it, colic and that’s when we were prescribed omeprazole.

I’m at my wits end mentally with it. My eldest has reflux but it affected her nowhere near as bad

My DS has a bit of a heat rash but it’s normally only on his chest and tummy. Does the rash disappear when she cools down? We put DS into a cool bath to cool him and the rash pretty much cleared (like one or two dots but nothing like it was). Could you do the same and if it doesn’t ease up then you have more ammo for the next doc apt?

Your list of symptoms does sound like it’s worth trying hypoallergenic formula. Can you afford to buy some without prescription for now and then return to GP with “evidence” if it works?

@Pipparoo2025 The rash never disappears, it just gets more angry as the day goes on but it’s always there in the morning.

@BKBH The health visitor also suggested either really pushing it with the doctors or buying a tin and seeing what happens before having proof for the dr. I’ve just been dubious to chop and change her milk.

The dr’s have just made it out like I’m overreacting so I was coming on her for a second opinion. Doubting myself with everything at the moment as the dr’s have told me I’m over feeding her causing the reflux, probably overdressing her causing the heat rash and said I was winding wrong. Surprised they didn’t ask if I was a first time mum at this rate with how they spoke to me 😵‍💫

I’m would trust your gut and push it. If you can afford it I’d buy it now and see. Take pics so doc can see the progression.

DS (10 weeks old) had all these symptoms, very noticeable from maybe 3/4 weeks which were getting worse. Doctor wasn't interested. I BF so cut out dairy from my diet, he also has one bottle of formula a day so I switched that to a goats milk one, there's no need for a prescription formula if you think CMPA is the culprit just need to avoid cows milk.

He is so much better now, happier after feeds, easier to burp, acne cleared, rarely if ever sick, less of the choke/gasp feeding.

At his 8 week check the GP agreed with everything we'd done, which is slightly annoying as nobody advised us to do it!
I actually don't know if CMPA was the cause, or he just grew out of it, but it's been easy enough to make the changes and it certainly hasnt hurt (except I desperately miss dairy for myself!)

I’m so sorry they are dismissing you like this! You’ll know if you’re getting good burps out, pace feeding her and she feels a comfortable temperature to touch. Your gut is telling you something is up for a reason, it’s worth a shot with the different formula IMO. You can always switch back if no improvement 🙃

I was told my daughters rash was viral and absolutely nothing in my diet... She has over 20 food allergies!

She is also a rashy child. A rash came up on her arms and torso about 2 years ago after a reaction to a food and we have never got it to go away on her arms. It flares up now and then and gets irritable but the rest of the time it doesn't bother her. We moisturise it to keep it under control

It might be worth getting a tin for formula to try.
Take care with goats formula as the proteins in mammalian milks are Avery similar and approximately 90% of babies that are allergic to cows milk are allergic to goats milk too.

That's interesting about the goats milk, I didn't know that! We seem to be getting away with it but he doesn't have much and I don't even know if CMPA was actually our problem.

These babies are a minefield

@Superscientist that’s interesting as the same dr also saw me for my eldest when she was 6/7m old for a rash on her cheeks and just told me it was dry skin/eczema. We’ve never been able to control it and it flares up randomly. I’ve actually ordered an allergy test kit for her as it would surprise me if she has some intolerances as I have IBD.

I’ve ordered a tin today, hopefully it arrives tomorrow so we can get started. I just need to rule it out for my sanity. Little one actually got a bit of heat rash from the car seat straps today and it went within an hour or so once I’d made sure she’d cooled down so I’m 99% this rash is not heat rash.
