top teeth digging in during feeds

DD is 15 months and has recently got her top teeth. The biting has stopped (for now, thankfully!) but now her teeth are quite big I'm very aware of them digging in sometimes during feeds. I'm latching her on very carefully to avoid her clamping or biting down so don't think that's the problem.

Can anyone advise?

My ds is 13m and we have the same prob. I have got used to having teeth marks after a feed

I find it's worse when teething.

Sorry not much help there!

I had this, but also discovered that I was really feeling it much more when I was coming down with thrush on the nipple - when I cleared that it didn't hurt one tenth as much. Might not be the case - but probably worth a try, just in case.

It's not deliberate biting, she just needs to relearn the shape of her mouth. Take her off, say "that hurt Mummy" and relatch. Even if it's not the front teeth that come through they still will do that.

The other possibility is if you are giving her a straw , pinch it when she drinks. I had this problem for months and that's what it turned out to be! She had gotten into the habit of biting her straws to slow the flow and carried it over to BF'ing too!

My 17 month old DS has now got 16 teeth. The first 8 came through at around 6-7 months and the last 8 in the last few weeks. He did go through a period of biting with the first lot and even now he will occasionally leave teeth marks. But on the whole I don't feel his teeth at all.

I found I had to be extra vigilant about his latch, and even things like positioning can help. I also found he had a tendency to bite when he'd finished a feed and was just 'playing' so I made sure to take him off as soon as he'd finished.

I think it takes them a while to adapt their teeth coming in. Once he gets used to them and if you carry on adjusting positioning and latch it will hopefully not get any worse.

This happened with both of mine too. I found going back to basics with latching helps until they get used to thier new mouth shape. Try to get them to lay in your lap rather than sitting up, and tip thier head back so that thier chin is touchingthe underneath of your boob rather than the nose touching the top, if that makes any sense! Once we'd got to grips with it all again all I need to do now is occaisionally remind them "chin up!" and the teeth marks stop.

Ah yes Monkies, I still have to tickle Tink's nose with my nipple sometimes to get a big mouth!
