farking leaky boobs - I may as well wear a sack

What's the point in dressing nicely? Am so pissed off, went out for coffee and within minutes have a massive wet patch from boob to waist. Do depressed with leaking. Am using breast shells when feeding and that helps but obviously cant go out in them. Any advice/sympathy welcomed

MrsBadger · 23/05/2008 11:44

i think i have a box of lansinoh ones left btw - happy to post to you?

deaconblue · 23/05/2008 12:23

thank you for instant sympathy. you are much better than dh who helpfully said "we can always get the bottles out". Grr.
I am using avent washable ones which cope with my right boob fine but the left one seems super leaky. I think it must gush as the pad will be dry one minute and the next I'm soaked through to my Tshirt. I've not been keen on disposable pads as they don't seem as comfortable on sore nipples. My worry with getting lilypadz was do they cause blockages? (I tend to get lumpy boobs with using pumps or anything non-baby on my breasts)
DD is only 4 weeks old so am hoping it will get better as my boobs get used to her varying demand. I think I'm particulary bad today as she went 4 hourly during hte night for the first time.

I tried washables once. Never again.

deaconblue · 23/05/2008 12:43

have sent dh to Tesco to look for Tommee Tippee disposables, they look pretty big so hopefully will absorb more.
Don't mind sore nipples, don't mind getting up every 2 1/2 hours in the night to feed, but I really object to having to walk around the shops looking like I'm in a horror version of a wet T shirt contest!

I have loads of washable ones, they are about to go on ebay.. 99% of them unused. I just didn't find they were absorbant enough.
I used the avent ones. found them comfy on sore nips.
Good luck

amner · 23/05/2008 12:47

It will get better. I promise.

After a few months, maybe more, maybe less... you'll find you dont leak at all.

I used a combination of mothercare disposable and washable ones.

The shells are great. You know you can collect the milk in them and pour into ice trays and freeze don't you ? Comes in handy when you start weaning as you can mix with the food to give a familiar taste to something new.

Tutter · 23/05/2008 13:08

the tommee tippee ones ae geat - identical to the lansinoh ones - same pads i think

if you like them i'll send you my leftoves Gin

solo · 23/05/2008 13:10

I always used the washables as I didn't find the disposibles particularly comfortable.
Much sympathy btw, I was a big leaker too!

Tallis · 23/05/2008 13:26

As another gusher, I too found washables hopeless. I tried loads of disposables, including Lansinohs. But the best of all were Boots ones. They do two sorts - the cheap ones I took straight back because they were just so scratchy. I stood in the baby aisle trying to persuade the shop assistant that they weren't fit for purpose and I wanted my money back. "BUt you['ve opened the box" she kept saying. By the end, a gaggle of lactating women were all backing me up saying, no, they're horrendously uncomfortable.

But their more expensive version - tops. I think £4.99 a box.

deaconblue · 23/05/2008 13:27

tutter you are fast becoming my saviour what with this and the loan of your maternity dress. thank you, would be great if youcould send your spares - shall I pop an SAE in the post?

I used to leak a lot and found that Tommee Tippee disposable breast pads were the best closely followed by Boots ultra slim ones. IME don't even try supermarkets own brand ones as I found them useless!!

emma1977 · 24/05/2008 22:08

I've tried every brand of pads out there as well as washables.

Washables are cack- I soak through them within a minute of starting a feed (and ds is 5 months). I agree with others on here that Tommee Tippee or Boots ultra slim are the best. Johnson and Johnson ones are also comfy but I find them a bit small and easily loose them in my bra (I have huge norks). Avoid the cheapy Boots or supermarket own brand opens like the plague- scratchy, scratchy, scratchy.

Also invest in some lansinoh cream for those sore nips.

cazee · 24/05/2008 22:34

Washables are good when your supply is very stable and you don't leak much, or at all, but while you are leaking (and I was very leaky until dd was about 1 year old), then the Tommee Tippee ones are brilliant. It is like the difference between an Always Ultra towel and a Tesco value towel.

deaconblue · 25/05/2008 15:50

Have got Tommee Tippee finally and am really pleased - so far no leaking through. She's back to 3 hourly feeding though so that helps too. am using breast shells but keep forgetting to sterilise first so can't save the milk - must get more organised

OP posts:
chipmonkey · 25/05/2008 16:07

I wouldn't worry about sterilising the shells, if they are clean. BM is antibacterial anyway and it's a waste to throw the milk away.

tassisssss · 25/05/2008 16:16

i had this problem too

tommee tippee are the best...washables won't cut it at this stage

now i used shells with ds and found out after using them for a while that they make the issue WORSE as they create a suction which encourages the milk to flow so unless you want this (ie if you're storing the milk) then try to wean yourself off them and as you do the amount of milk you leak should get less.

ExtraFancy · 25/05/2008 16:29

I used Chicco ones - they have the same sort of gel in them that sanitary towels/nappies do, so they didn't go all soggy and rank when they got saturated. Highly recommend them but no idea where you buy them, as my box was a gift.

SpookyMadMummy · 25/05/2008 17:05

I had a similar problem and I used to have to double up breast pads, One central and the other underneath but overlapping iyswim. It did get better as Dd got older.
