Does anyone have any advice on when to introduce baby rice and how much is supposed to be given? My 3 month old is constantly starving for a bottle😅

NHS says six months. Mine started weaning at 4 months. I didn't use baby rice though, porridge. Some babies are ready before 6 months but I'd speak to your HV or GP first

Coledovex · 12/06/2025 06:05

I’ll speak to his GP about it the HV is beyond useless. Thank you guys :)

As close to 6 months as you can get, and don't bother with baby rice.

Rayna37 · 12/06/2025 06:18

never? Surely you want to start with things like veg, and at six months. Refined carbs like baby rice are totally unnecessary. If they can’t handle proper rice they’re too young for food full stop.

Coledovex · 12/06/2025 06:19

The reason I put the post on was because it’s my first baby and I was very unsure and the internet. HV, GP all say different things 😬

it's a minefield - welcome to parenthood.

at this age, if baby needs more milk it needs more milk.
advice on weaning is slowly changing. if you have lots of allergies in your family it's advised to introduce allergens (peanuts, nuts, wheat, egg, dairy) in tiny amounts from 4months. but speak to the hv, they should be de expert on this.

SabbatWheel · 12/06/2025 06:24

DD was on baby rice at 4m, she was a poor milk feeder, she needed weaning. However, this was nearly 30 years ago and baby rearing these days would have an attack of the vapours about weaning early these days.

My favourite saying I picked up from MN is "Everybody fed, nobody dead" and this always applies. Talk to your GP or another reliable individual for personalised advice of course, but don't be afraid to go with your instinct too.

What have they each said? I never asked my gp anything about weaning.. I cannot even think why you’d ask the gp.

Coledovex · 12/06/2025 06:28

My mam has a friend that’s a GP so I just thought I’d ask. She said it was okay yet HV said not until 6m, google said the same but then others on internet say 4m onwards

Early weaning (before 6 months) has been linked to stomach problems later in life. There was more evidence about that so they changed the rules to say 6 months plus. If they suggest weaning early that usually because the risk to not do it out ways the risk of doing it. Personally I’d just wait until 6 months and give more milk now, not worth the chance of problems down the line in my opinion.

peafritterandcurrysauce · 12/06/2025 06:42

Not before six months. that’s the recommendation from the world health organisation. Early weaning can lead to stomach disorders later in life. Baby food manufacturers have often labelled from four months but they are now changing labels to six months old in line with WHO recommendations. If they are hungry more breast milk/formula is the way to go. This gives complete nutrition. Health visitors are usually better on (non medical) baby advice than doctors because that’s their speciality. When you wean, rather than baby rice, give vegetables ands fruit to start with. Google “baby led weaning” and “first baby’s foods”.

MalcolmMoo · 12/06/2025 06:43

6 months. NHS advice is 6 months.

Oneofthedays · 12/06/2025 06:45

6 months unless you have been advised otherwise by a paediatrician, e.g. due to allergies.

Baby rice is never necessary. After 6 months you can start giving them what you eat, with some caveats.

SoManyDandelions · 12/06/2025 06:59

She's probably having a growth spurt 😊
Just give her more formula for now. This will make sure she's getting all the nutrients she needs.

At this age she would probably just spit baby rice back out/push it out with her tongue, so it would be a waste of time. There are loads of reels on Facebook of people 'feeding' their tiny babies, but none of the food is actually going in!

didgeridid · 12/06/2025 07:21

As others have said 6 months and just give baby what you have.
