Steri-bottle - has anyone used these?

Sullwah · 22/05/2008 11:28

We are off to Budapest this weekend with our 14 week old twins - 10 weeks corrected age (mad - I know!).

Will only be there for two nights and as a solution to the sterilising nightmare I thought I would used these disposable bottles with ready made formula.

I tried out the fast flow which was too fast for my two - so bought the medium flow ones.

Just had an experiment. It took several tries to put the thing together without severe leakage. DT1 took it ok but DT2 was fussing alot at the end of his feed. Not sure if the speed of the teat is too fast for him.

Any experiences / advice please?

Hiya,

We used them for ds in Corfu when he was three months.

We also used the ready made formula.

Ds took to them fine. I think they did two different speeds at the time, but he had the quicker one of the two.

HTH

You have to screw them a lot tighter than you would think.

tatty33 · 22/05/2008 12:37

Just a warning, and the rules may have changed since last year when I flew to canada, but make sure formula is in your hold luggage not hand luggage. Security made us open cartons, so we could taste them.

So if you can get away with powder/ water for journey and use the cartons when you're there.

The travel milton tablets aren't bad

oilandwater · 22/05/2008 13:46

are those the ones from boots? i used them once and they leaked a lot - db got soaked.

Buda · 22/05/2008 13:50

I have used them when travelling once but DS wasn't keen.

However - am in Budapest so could lend you a proper steriliser if you like??

chipmonkey · 22/05/2008 14:47

Sullwah. I only used steribottles once, it was when I was expressing milk in work and had stupidly forgotten to bring my breastmilk storage containers. They were the only clean containers I could find and they did leak when put sideways, luckily I discovered this straight away before all the milk leaked out! Will you have access to a microwave? Medela do these microwave sterilising bags which I found great on one trip abroad.

micci25 · 22/05/2008 14:49

i used to keep one in my bag with some ready to use formula for dd2 incase we ended up staying out longer than we expected we never had any problems with them

suwoo · 22/05/2008 14:53

DS found the flow too fast also. I used the microwave bags that chipmonkey recommended and they were fab! That was for a two week holiday. If you have a microwave, I would highly recommend them. Won't you have to take shit loads of bottles and cartons for twins? Easier to take one tin of formula and your normal bottles IMO.

lulalullabye · 22/05/2008 14:59

Look into avent feeding system. Called via. You get a pack of ten cups that just look like drink cups. They then screw onto a teat that you can quickly wash.

We used them for a flight to Aus and they were great.

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 15:04

if they are the ones from tommee tippee then colditz is right, you have to screw them on a lot tighter than a human being would EVER think possible or they leave like blazes. experiment with cooled boiled water over the sink first so you can see what we mean... it pours out everywhere. then a couple more twists (that you didn't realise were possible) and it's fine. excellent, even.

quint · 22/05/2008 15:04

Used the steribottles twice - first time leaked everywhere - realised I hadn;t screwed the lid on tight enough, used them a 2nd time, so really screwed them on - still huge leakage - crap, never used tehm again, try the avent ones a known name, would hope they would be better.

Have a good time

jellyforbrains · 22/05/2008 15:09

You can also get some 'sterile sealed in pouch' sterilising bags. The bag has a drawstring and contains a sterilising tablet. You can just fill with water and hang from a doorknob or something - each bag good for a day. I had some from mothercare last year to take on holiday (came in a pack of 7 I think). Wasn't ff, but took them to sterilise beakers etc in case the water was dodgy and the DCs got a tummy bug.

Enraha · 22/05/2008 15:13

I find them fine for an 'insurance' feed like micci. You have to be v.careful putting the cap on, as there's no going back if you cross-thread, and you can't take the lid off to start again.

The teats are more squishy than Avent ones so my DD tends to bite down initially, but then gets the hang of it. With the age of your twins, would be tempted to get the 0-3 month variety.

I think they are a godsend for a day out and a 12-pack might see you through a 2 night stay, but I'd take a couple of normal bottles too just in case.

Milton tabs are ok, and a shoe-box sized tupperware box is the right capacity to dissolve 1 tablet. You can pack all number of baby bits and bobs in the box for the journey too.

Buda · 22/05/2008 16:43

Actually - just remembered we have used the Mothercare bags too and on another occasion a large tupperware box with Milton tabs. That is prob your easiest option really.

Having said that if you want to borrow a plug in one - let me know.

Sullwah · 22/05/2008 17:03

Thanks Buda for your offer.

Think I will just take my luck (but will pack 4 AVENT bottles and the sterlising bags just in case!). And will make sure I screw them on very very well.

my steribottles also leaked

have you considered getting the mothercare sterliser bottles here

they're great for travel, so long as you have access to a microwave...

HeadFairy · 22/05/2008 18:45

It may not be practical for twins, but I found this mini steriliser really handy for travelling. It only does two bottles at a time so it might not be enough for your needs.

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 20:44

they don't leak, though. there's just a knack to them not leaking so that's why you practise with water first.

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 20:45

and tbh if you wash your usual bottles in v hot soapy water and air dry, they'll be fine anyway so there's no need for fuss.

AlexanderPandasmum · 26/05/2008 21:56

We went to Benidorm with DS, and took cartons, sachets (7oz ones) and steribottles, but he was only on 2-3 feeds a day by that time at 10 months so it was totally doable with the cartons (just that there weren't enough in the shop when I went to buy them!). I had bought them for emergencies in the past when I was exclusively expressing and feeding in a bottle (after one awful episode where I was in town with a storage bottle, breastpump and hungry crying baby but no milk and no teat - never again I thought!

He got on OK with them although one of the cartons leaked in the suitcase and mixed with the small bag of weetabix I'd packed and then went all over the clothes...and you can imagine the mess .

We also assumed there'd be a kettle at the hotel but with it being an all-inclusive they didn't have any and couldn't see a problem (just pointed us towards the coffee machines! ). We went for a walk the next morning and despite me worrying managed to buy one at a shop 5 mins' walk down the road! But if I had my time again I'd probably bring a travel kettle just in case!

Good luck!

PictureThis · 26/05/2008 22:01

I've used these and found them to be a godsend when on holiday. They're fab. I would use them again.

Lukesmammy · 26/05/2008 22:17

I've used these loads and they are great once you get the hang of them! They don't leak so long as you screw them on correctly. (I only learnt this by pouring milk all over myself on numerous occasions).

The trick is to line up the grooves of the bottle lid and neck precisely as you are putting the lid on and then turn until you can click no more and hey presto - no leakage!

Bewilderbeast · 26/05/2008 22:29

they can be a little bit fast flowing but otherwise they are ok

youngbutnotdumb · 26/05/2008 22:51

I used steri bottles quite alot when my DS was young never went out without 1 in the changing bag with a carton of ready made cow and gate because when FF you can never be too careful incase we were out too long or something. I thought they were absolutely brilliant TBH I always bought the medium flow bttles which were fine for my DS. I didnt like the idea of them expensive and not exactly eco friendly but I went on holiday for a week to visit family when DS was 6 weeks old and they were an absolute god send no sterilising no preparing milk just pour in and screw on the lid easy as that. But as mentioned always make sure they are screwed on rite or you could end up caked in Formula.

Sullwah · 27/05/2008 12:09

Got back from our trip last night.

Steri-bottles are fantastic!!

It made the two night trip sooo much easy. Yes - they do leak if you dont srew them in properly - so you need to practice first.

But it really saved me from having to do the bottle wash and sterilising and cooling boiled water drama while we were away so that I could actually enjoy the trip.

I took a couple of Avent bottles for the dreamfeed (and took along those disposable cold water sterilising bags) but otherwise used steri-bottles on a chuck and go basis.

For two babies for three days - I needed a big case collapsable case to carry them with - but then had much less to carry on the way home.

Fantastic invention!
