Mums- help a girl out.. reflux/choking/laryngomalacia

Firstly , thank you so much for reading. I’m really looking for reassurance and support so if you have a good story or some help you can give me. I would love to hear it.

I have a four month old, my second born, who Is really struggling with a reflux(bottle fed). Recently, I had to call 999 because it sounded as though he was choking and couldn’t breathe. I’m convinced it was reflux and so as the paediatrician.

Consequently, I am now petrified. I can barely sleep! I tilt his crib, give smaller regular feeds, wind for 30 minutes, keep him upright to most of the time, use a Snuz clip and we have now been given Gaviscon. He also has Laryngomalacia which is a floppy larynx and leads to noisy breathing.

Please, please tell me if you have any tips or if you’ve been through something similar and are out the other side. The anxiety is overwhelming!

Thank you

Is it formula the wee one's on?
If so what kind?

My niece was premature and suffered from reflux for months after being released from hospital and her mum put her on the cow and gate anti- colic and that was her sorted, even just for a wee while. The reason they have reflux is because sometimes when babies are born the sphincter at the top of the stomach ( that stops food coming up when u lie down) isn't developed enough yet so changing bab's milk to anti colic just for a few months might help.

Hi! Laryngomalacia and reflux go hand in hand - you need to go back for gp and ask for something stronger/better than gaviscon. Also how was the malacia diagnosed? Have they seen ENT

@ElinorOlifunt.. funny you ask that. We saw 2 GPs who thought it was laryngo, referred us to the ENT, but after being told we could be waiting 6months, paid privately and had it diagnosed. Sad but necessary for the anxiety of wondering what was causing the breathing issues!

If you’ve been given Gaviscon, you must use it with regular formula. Be prepared to need something stronger as gaviscon mainly thickens and doesn’t stop the pain - omeprazole is the common PPI medication prescribed, but takes a few weeks of dosing to become effective.

Laryngo and reflux go hand in hand. You will probably see an improvement after baby is sitting more - as you will with the reflux.

Two of my DC had surgery for Laryngo at 12 and 16 weeks respectively, diagnosed by ENT at a very early age and quickly referred for surgery.
ENT maintained that surgery is an uncommon occurrence overall.

@Babybarn feel free to drop me a PM as
all my DC have had reflux and Laryngo so I’m an old hand - LO is approaching 19
months and this will be my final reflux/laryngo journey!

It might be helpful to ask that consultant to recommend reflux treatment as GPs often need to prescribe ‘off-label’ and like consultant guidance on this - also if the breathing is very bad did they suggest any surgical treatment of the laryngo? Sometimes they can cut away the floppy bits to help the breathing but it depends on the severity

Coming back here to say my, now, 7.5month old’s reflux is SO MUCH BETTER because of…… CAROBEL. You can buy it on Amazon (not in pharmacies) or apparently be prescribed it.

it took for us to see the most senior paediatrician to find this out. Really hope it helps someone.

ps. The laryngomalacia is GONE and was drastically better by 5months. An owlet foot sock (he still wears) and helped with reassuring us. Hang in there dear readers! X

@Spareincoming hijacking this thread but wondered if you could help me as you’ve offered to the original poster. I’ve posted a similar thread as we’re having similar issues. It’s not my first rodeo as DD had extreme reflux etc but laryngomalacia was never specifically mentioned with her. Am now going through it with DS.
