Baby irritable

Hi everyone,
im just wondering if anybody has experienced this with their newborns and what they have done to help it.
my baby girl is 4 weeks 1 day and is on Aptamil advance formula and about 30 minutes after will start to get really fussy especially when lying on her back due to excessive gas, she seems to not pass stools often and sounds very chesty when she’s breathing, when feeding her I will stop every ounce to burp her and I’ve tried infacol to help towards getting wind up which is working. She refuses to settle right up until her next feed which can be quite tiring as I barely get a minute to myself to do basic things such as brushing my teeth or going to the toilet.
I just need help as I’ve not experienced this with my first born, I’m waiting for a reply from my health visitor and would appreciate answers in the meantime while I’m waiting, thank you.

Also I forgot to mention she does spit up, vomit some of her bottle too even after countless burps😢

Possibly reflux with it being worse when lying down I would try to feed in an more upright position to start with

I do hold her upright while feeding even 20-30 minutes after she’s feeding unfortunately it’s just not helping her much, I just feel so helpless but I know Aptamil do a reflux formula so I’ll give that a go and see if that helps🤞

That sounds hard. It may be reflux from what you’re describing, my baby (now 9 weeks) went from being very chilled to being like this. She was prescribed infant gaviscon about 3/4 weeks ago and is so much more comfortable and therefore happier, easier to settle. I’d ask your gp about it.

Are you pace feeding?
Is she better if you just hold her upright all the time?
How often does she poo? What is the texture? Any sign of mucus?

Yes I’m pace feeding, she seems to gulp the bottle even when holding her upright and the bottle is on an angle to were she can stop and breathe she also cries for more when being winded during the feed. She poos once a day sometimes it can just be like a skid mark after a fart and none at all until the next day then it can be an explosion… no signs of mucus and the texture is watery but with the little bits in still

Infant gaviscon makes formula a bit thicker which makes it harder to reflux. The reflux formulas are also usually thicker for the same reason but you mustn't use infant gaviscon with a reflux formula as it can then become too thick.

That all sounds fairly normal.

Have you tried different bottles?

Would I have to speak to a gp in order to get it? I’ve not seen it out on supermarket shelves, thank you

Over 12 months you can buy infant gaviscon over the counter at the pharmacy but under 12 months it's prescription only.
There are other thickeners available that you can buy such as carobel and a few others.
One of the issues with thickeners is it makes the stomach contents thicker which can then cause constipation when it's coming out

Mam and nuk are normally recommended but I’m a few years out of date. I just pop onto these kind of threads as my babies had allergies and some times Mums on these threads says some thing which suggests an allergy but nothing it ring allergy alarm bells for me.
