How am I supposed to know if DS has vomited up a whole feed?

7 week old DS has been pretty sick after 3 out of 4 feeds today - seems to be a mix of digested and undigested milk and is much more than usual.

I keep reading that I am supposed to take him straight to the doctors if he has vomited up an entire feed twice in a row. My baby is breastfed apart from one bottle in the evening - how the hell am I meant to know if he has vomited the whole lot up when I have no idea how much has actually gone into him most of the time?????

Any ideas on how I can determine whether he has sicked up his whole feed? Are we talking a few tablespoons worth (which is what it probably is) or should I only be concerned if it is pouring out of him?

FWIW although he was screaming when vomiting this morning, he was quite happily vomiting after most recent feed, so he doesn't seem particularly ill right at the moment.

Holidays, I always find this a crazy piece of advice, as a formula/bottle feeding mother would never be able to tell if the baby had brought back a whole feed, either - you can't estimate volume in this way, when it shoots out/dribbles/splatters.....

If you're worried, maybe you'll feel better just calling the HV. Generally, if the baby looks well and does not appear to be dehydrated or feverish, then there's nothing to be too concerned about, but talking to someone in real life is prob best.

Hope all is well.

A MW told me that when you spill liquids it always looks like there is more than there is.

If he is breastfed then he will take as much as he needs on his next feed to make up for it and BM is the best thing for a poorly tummy.

Thanks guys - glad it's not just me who thinks the advice is insane!

We're off to HV today so I'll talk to her about it then. It was unusual for him to be so sick but he was pretty happy in himself apart from that one feed and was fine yesterday.

Ds2 (4 months tomorrow) has been a real puker too but as long as his nappies have been ok and he has generally been well, I haven't had cause to worry. Perhaps not worry about volumes/amounts and focus on if he is ok in himself. Ds2 used to happily fall asleep after enormous pukes which required complete changes of clothes for both us us (inc my pants!) and I think he was just clearing a bit of space!

My DS has been possetting quite a bit in the last week and when I asked the HV about it, she said only to worry if it is fresh milk (not curdled as the curdled looking type usually means it has been in his tummy and he was only bringing up wind) and if he was doing projectile vomit! Mind you, DS put on 13oz in a week so she probably didn't think he had a problem! LOL.

OK, so if my dd regularly brings up fresh milk after a feed (re advice given to angel1976) , is this likely to indicate reflux? Family members seem to believe that it is just overflow - any thoughts?
Thanks.
