Can anyone recommend a good electric breast pump?

Pro's and cons please.

Im using an Avent manual one, that is very good, but as I plan to use it alot, an electric one would be best.
Thanks in advance.

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the recommendations may be a little out of date. We've tested a whole host of products to find the best electric breast pump on the market right now.

Hope this helps! Flowers

I had a medela mini electric for DS. I used it daily, sometimes a couple of times a day, and it did the job well enough. I was never great with expressing though. And it was REALLY noisy.

With DD I treated myself to an ameda lactaline double pump and the difference between that and the medela is like night and day. It's amazing. I can get more milk out, more quickly, from both sides and it doesn't make such a noise. I can hear the TV while using it! They also have good resale on ebay as you can buy all the funnel/bottle bits (collection set) separately.

I found the Avent Isis IQ brilliant, could express a full 240ml bottle in about 20 mins. Although maybe I'm just a freak.

flubdub · 18/05/2008 15:36

wow missblythe - thats amazing.
Im with my manual one, i get between 1.5 - 2.5 oz in 20mins. I get about 3oz first thing in the morning.
the avent isis ones seem to be quite cheap on ebay too.

I like my Medela Swing, though as others have said, it is a bit noisy.

The first one I bought was an Italian brand called Bibi (I think) and it was an utter waste of money. Couldn't get anything out and felt like it was going to rip my nipple clean off.

amner · 19/05/2008 23:25

Are you interested in a medela mini electric one at all ?

amner · 19/05/2008 23:26

Twas very good at doing the job !

I have a Medela double pump, which works pretty well, but I ended up preferring a combination of manual expression followed by the Avent Isis. I think it's because you can vary the pumping strengh, speed much more quickly when the pump is manual.
The whole pump fits into a carrying bag, with lots of compartments for bottles, tubes etc.. and there is a cool section for keeping milk expressed away from home.
I bought mine on Ebay, it was 'as new' and ended up costing around £60 including postage. It works with a 9 volt adaptor so I just used a British one, easy to find and worked well.
The double pump was quite handy for work though, and I didn't need to use my hands, kind of tucked it in my bra.

rowingboat · 19/05/2008 23:42

Sorry, to clarify that - I meant that the Isis actually got more milk 'out' than any electric, double pump I tried, including those in hospital.

Totally recommend the Avent Isis double breast pump. It is ace and could fill 2 of the little Avent bottles (120ml?) in 10-15 mins. Easy to take apart for cleaning and easy to put back together too. Would offer to sell you mine but have lent it to a friend.

bellabelly · 19/05/2008 23:46

Think i paid about £100 on ebay for mine but that included lots of bottles, teats, freezer bags etc. And postage.

chipmonkey · 20/05/2008 01:00

I am going to sound like an expessing freak here but I have all the Avent pumps I love the duo, it's very efficient at getting the milk out and fairly quiet in that it certainly couldn't be heard in a neighbouring room. But it is ver expensive to buy new and it sounds like bellybelly got a very good deal on ebay as I paid £250 for mine which was deivered direct from Avent, only took a day to get to me in Ireland.
I got the Uno mainly for travelling as I had done a few business trips with the duo and was tired of lugging it around airports and ds3 was a toddler by then. It's perhaps not as powerful as the duo but is actually not much noisier than the manual.

ninedragons · 20/05/2008 03:30

The Swing could have a better name. It always seems like a snarky reminder that your boobs are more pendulous now than they once were.

chipmonkey · 20/05/2008 19:09

LOL ninedragons!

rowingboat · 23/05/2008 10:40

I just wanted to update this. I checked the model name of the Medela that I have and it is called 'pump in style', great for taking to work, easy and lots of extras. I would like to add that I am not convinced that pumping in style is possible with any pump..

MrsBadger · 23/05/2008 10:43

Ameda Lactaline double

not cheap but 6oz in 20min while eating a sandwihc and reading the paper - can't beat that!

BeachBunni · 23/05/2008 11:36

Used the Ameda lactaline double too. Good, but again thought it was quite noisy

MrsBadger · 23/05/2008 11:38

ah - my expressing cupboard room has noisy aircon so I don't notice it

and it doesn't squeak like my hand pump did!

Innat · 23/05/2008 14:20

Another vote here for the Avent Isis - i have the single one as i don't use it every day.

don't get boots own brand electric pump. i borrowed it off a friend and it was absolutely crap! it was almost impossible to put it together properly to get the suction right.

WilfSell · 23/05/2008 14:26

Ameda lactaline is the best: efficient, easy to assemble and disassemble and clean (but buy spare valve for when you split them with too vigorous cleaning...). double or single flexibility. I don't find it too noisy.
