I was hoping to still BF until 18 months, but think this may be too close to birth as I have no wish (or energy) to tandem feed. Has anyone been through this and can give me advice on the best way of dropping feeds in time?

Also I'm a bit worried about my energy levels as I'm still doing about four day feeds as I think we are currently enjoying a growth spurt/catch up post illness.

You've plenty of time to tail it off. Don't panic.

agree

congrats btw

Just see how you get on. I fed ds1 nearly all the way through my pregnancy with ds2.

Your energy levels will be low because you are in the first trimester, when tiredness really kicks in.

You may find that your dc self-weans during the pregnancy, or you may get more energy and not be so bothered about tandem feeding.
I'm not sure that anyone sets out to tandem feed, but some people just find themselves in that position and roll with it, and there are some advantages from what I can see.

(I am still feeding 2.3 yr old dd and am 20 weeks pregnant).

thank you . good advice on the non panic front. I'm still (delighted) at being pregnant and at what lies ahead. I guess I'll have to leave it up to the LO and see how it goes.

I think later in pregnancy your milk changes (goes back to colostrum) at which point your LO1 will probably cut down on feeds... but may be worth checking with NCT or someone actually knowledgeable about this to be sure .

Congrats on the pregnancy, I'm jealous (still bf DS at 8.5 months and no sign of anything happening on sibling front...)

My DD1 self-weaned when she was 18 months and I was 6 months pg with DD2. Your milk can change taste/consistency in pg, which may lead to self-weaning. I did help a bit by doing the 'don't offer, don't refuse' as I felt by six months pg I was physically knackered and too uncomfortable with the bump to be bfing as well.

Check out the kellymom site which has loads of info on this sort of thing. But it's up to you and how comfortable you feel. ANd congratulations on your pg!

I was still BFing DD at 8 months when I found out i was pregnant. I wanted to keep going with it as long as I could, but my nips got excruciatingly painful around the six week mark. She was already getting a bottle through the day and was BF morning and through the night. I got through the sore nips bit, but wanted to stop feeding her myself so she had a few days of bottles, but then I had a wobbly and started excl BFing her again. I did this until around the 10 months mark when she started to refuse the breast (I was three months by then). She also seemed to not be getting enough as she kept saying she was hungry...took us a few days to work out what GeeGee meant, but boy did I feel guilty when I figured it out so reintroduced bottles and she has been fine since then. Her last BF was about 3 weeks ago. I've not haad any problems with engorgement or anything, as I think my supply was dwindling of it's own accord anyway. This was all doubly complicated by a five week long tummy bug that she was suffereing from and she just had no interest in feeding much of anything for about a week.

Just realised that probably sounds very garbled, but if I were you I'd drop maybe one feed a day per week over the next few weeks and see how you get on. I did find night feeds really hard when I was in the middle of the first trimester all consuming fatigue.

congratulations on your pregnancy

and to echo starlight......when I ws BFing, my MS was manageable. As soon as I stopped I was being sick as a dog. When I re-started, it all went back to maneageable. My doc said probably co-incidence and it was probably due to hormones, but I think it was definately the BFing that was keeping the symptoms at bay.

BabiesEverywhere · 18/05/2008 09:53

I would just go day by day and see how things go.

I am nursing my 21 month old DD and am 6.5 months pregnant. I still have milk and as long as I take care with her latch, no pain.

All the best

fourlittlefeet · 19/05/2008 22:09

thanks.. am thinking I'll drop day feeds over this month and carry on morning and evening until morning sickness no longer threatens

Congratulations! I BFed DD1 when pregnant with DD2. She started biting, I don't know if she felt frustrated with the taste or the lower quantity or why it happened. Basically, more or less she gave up by herself.

harpsichordcarrier · 19/05/2008 22:16

don't panic
I bf through my second pregnancy (no morning sickness) and tandem fed for about a year afterwards, it was great and I felt fab and lost a ton of weight though have put it back on now
there are many benefits to tandem feeding not least that starting bf again is loads easier when you haven't stopped
don't make any rash decisions, see how it goes
congrats

fourlittlefeet · 20/05/2008 20:21

thank you! I know this is probably an impossible question, but any idea how long it takes before the milk ups a bit? the poor little thing is permanently starving and eating whole bananas before her breakfast!
