How often does everyone’s breastfed babies open there bowels? My daughters 4 months old and usually goes once every 7 days, until the last two weeks where it’s moved to every 9 days, we’re on day 9 now and she’s not emptied her bowels yet and just wondering how long is safe to leave them without a bowel movement? She’s not constipated or anything btw.

My nearly 4 month old goes every day sometimes multiple times, some times every 2 days but never longer than that. But if your daughter is happy and growing then it’s probably not an issue ?

JustMePlus3 · 17/04/2025 10:19

@ohpoowhatnowyeah it doesn’t really seem to be an issue, only problem being she’s still suffering with really bad gas pain (I’m assuming that’s what it is), she weights fine and growth ect, just seems everytime I go to feed her she starts screaming in what seems like pain and starts passing gas and seems really distraught about it all and didn’t know if going so long between opening her bowels may be the reason why, we’re due to see the paediatrician on the 8th of may but it’s very frustrating for us both in the mean time

what are her poos like when she does go ?

JustMePlus3 · 17/04/2025 10:29

@ohpoowhatnowvery loose, no substance to them, iv read up with breast milk they is very little waste so im assuming that’s why she goes so long inbetween, but yeah the consistency does seem normal for a bf baby, colours normal ect we’ve seen a dietitian who’s now given us the all clear for dairy, egg ect so just unsure as to why she’s dealing with such uncomfortable gas, poor girly

My 5 month old goes at least once a day. Occasionally twice. And very occasionally she'll skip a day and we all pay for it.

I would definitely be taking her to the doctor before your paediatrician appointment. It sounded like she's quite uncomfortable. Have you tried any gas remedies?

SpecduckularlyQuackers · 17/04/2025 10:39

My (breastfed) DC2 was an infrequent pooper at that age, typically every 5-8 days. Our GP said it was within the realms of normal for a breastfed baby but that we should get in touch with the GP if it went over 10 days.

JustMePlus3 · 17/04/2025 10:44

@Ticklishkneeswe’ve taken her over and over again from 5 weeks old and without sounding mean they’re absolutely useless, we’ve had two referrals to the paediatrician but they can’t get us in any sooner, she’s been prescribed laxido but it did nothing for her, she’s very uncomfortable, every feeds a battle but until we can see someone who’s experienced with babies we’re just stuck, the doctors just keep saying colic but when it’s only effecting her around feeds and passing gas/stools it’s obvious to us it’s something else

That sounds so hard and stressful for you. I'm guessing you've tried all the home remedies?

Sticking out until your paediatrician appointment is a long slog.

JustMePlus3 · 17/04/2025 10:56

@Ticklishkneesyeah we’ve done it all, no luck unfortunately, we’ll get there eventually just not nice to see her uncomfortable in the mean time

That was us (being upset around feeds, painful stomach and gas, but also reflux which you don't mention) and it improved massively when I cut out dairy and soy completely. I had to be very strict about it but he was a much happier baby after that.

Dr dismissed my concerns when he was little but when we weaned we tried giving dairy directly and he reacted very badly, he was very very sick for 24 hours poor thing.

JustMePlus3 · 17/04/2025 14:15

@UpAnDownMama463shes currently on omeprazole for reflux, i eliminated dairy, soy, eggs and caffeine from my diet from her being 4 weeks old and it made no difference unfortunately, I only started eating it again last week as we discussed it with the dietitian and she said if they was no significant improvement by now then it wasn’t going to be the cause of her discomfort, so we’re no closer to working out what the problem is unfortunately 😢

Mine were exclusively breastfed and I think one them used to sometimes go 9 or 10 days between poos around that age. Think I read at the time that as PP said, there isn't any waste sometimes with breastfeeding. Possibly means she is having a growth spurt. So long as she is feeding normally and peeing plenty it should be fine.

JustMePlus3 · 17/04/2025 20:02

@PeatandDieselfanisnt a fan of feeding, very uncomfortable for her, she’d go hours and hours sometimes if you let her, but hopefully we’ll get to the bottom of it when we see the paediatrician
