Warning poo picture - does this look like CMPA?

Took baby to GP as worried 10 week old had CMPA, suffering with very mucusy poos and gassy and generally unhappy.

They suggested an anti reflux milk despite him not being overly sicky. So I’ve tried cow and gate comfort as I know it’s a little thicker and wanted to see if the reduction in lactose would help.. he’s actually worse and I feel so bad for even changing his milk in the first place and hate to see him so upset.

I know I trusted my mum instinct.. as his poos we’re so so bad and beyond stinky.
so wanted to share a picture of his poo to get some opinions.. he was doing poos like this for about two weeks and the mucus increased over time.

That’s what baby poo looks like (except when a bit older and you give them blueberries and the poo is jet black and terrifying).

pleasepackitin · 02/04/2025 20:24

I’d say that looks my two babies poos did who do have cmpa.

ScoobyBooby · 02/04/2025 20:28

CMPA is different to Lactose intolerant , Lactose is the sugar in milk , CMPA is the proteins , so removing the lactose will not help anyone with CMPA .

Reflux is a red flag for CMPA.
As would that nappy in my opinion

Go back to your GP surgery and tell them you want to trial a hydrolysed formula . Look up the Guidelines for prescribing formula in your area x

I think that's relatively normal baby poo? Certainly both of mine have been similar and I've changed nappies of nieces and nephews when babysitting the same none of who have CMPA.

As for changing milk it can take a couple of weeks for the body to adjust. When I had my daughter the hospital put her on formula and they told me not to change brands as that one happened to 'suit her', my son is on a different brand to the one my daughter was on but he vomits copiously with the one she had even though brands aren't supposed to make much difference. There is a family at one of the groups I go to and one of her twins can't tolerate powdered milk but does fine on the same brand ready made stuff, whilst the other twin is fine on either.

MigGril · 02/04/2025 20:31

That's what my babies poo's looked like, until adding solids. Although mine where both breastfed. 🤔

Gonewiththeleaves · 02/04/2025 21:31

Looks normal to me (one CMPA baby, one not) with my CMPA baby there were other symptoms, reflux, projectile vomiting, unsettled after feeding, wouldn't sleep, rash and stringy mucous in nappy. I personally cannot see any mucous from your photo but worth speaking to GP if you have other symptoms too. Oh and the smell of my CMPA babies nappies was awful and vinegary!

LazJaz · 02/04/2025 21:33

Looks like the poos my CMPA babies had

Lindy2 · 02/04/2025 21:39

That looks like a fairly normal poop. They are supposed to look like korma sauce.

My baby who had cmpa had green poop. Bright green.

Thank you all! Some mixed responses here so I guess I need to go with my gut.

@ScoobyBooby @Gonewiththeleaves his other symptoms were constant gas, especially around an hour after feeding, painful tummy (bringing knees to chest), he wasn’t particularly sicky but would bring up parts of his feed but not projectile, he’d sound incredibly congested, especially at night - would sound like he’s choking on the phlegm at the back of his throat, and then of course these poos which he would sometimes have difficulty getting out - and they absolutely stink, can smell them from a mile off. Something just seemed off all of a sudden but the trial and error of new milk is so hard to watch, just want our happy boy back.

My GP said if he’s no better on anti reflux/comfort milk then she will give me a prescription. I’ve heard mixed things about aptimil Pepti because it’s so so thin.. but the whole thing is such a guessing game and so hard to trial on their poor tummies.

the comfort milk (C&G) isn’t going well but it’s only been 3 feeds so far.. I know I need to stick it out for his own benefit as there’s a chance in the long run he will be ok

Mucus is a sign of inflammation in the bowels. It isn’t normal for babies to have mucus in their poo. Although Colds can cause it due to the excess snot.
how many poos is baby doing a day on average ? My dd had one in every nappy, even if just a smear. She had silent reflux, bad belly pains, choking and gagging on bottles, rash (this is a common symptom)

dogmuminsurrey · 03/04/2025 09:31

@pleasepackitin this is exactly the same symptoms and he also has hiccups all the time. What did you use to help? He’s doing 1 poo a day

Oh yes I forgot the hiccups ! I don’t think the amount of poos matter, it’s more the pain with it and consistency. So dd1 pooed loads but dd2 barely pooed but had horrendous stomach aches. Both had mucus.
The gp put dd1 on aptimil pepti1 which didn’t help, it’s still got dairy in which is why for most babies it won’t make a difference, it’s hydrolysed which just means the body can digest it better. So we trialled that, said it wasn’t helping and then they gave us the Neocate which is totally dairy free but very expensive hence them trying pepti first ! Neocate is what you need. They have to prescribe it as it’s an allergy at the end of the day so it’s a medical need. But ask to be referred to a paediatric dietician, they are the ones who tell the drs to prescribe.

dogmuminsurrey · 03/04/2025 09:52

@pleasepackitin so the Neocate was to help with the silent reflux or did she also have CMPA which caused the reflux?
we’re on cow and gate comfort at the moment .. hasn’t been even 24 hours yet but no sign of it helping so far

Well as the reflux is a result of the cmpa switching to a dairy free formula in turn stopped the reflux.

I’ve found some pics of dd1 poop and her big distended belly from the Inflammation

@pleasepackitin oh poor girl. It’s so hard to keep persevering with a new milk if he’s still so unsettled. I’m so tempted to put him back on the old one cos the comfort milk seems to be making him worse..
I could call the GP in the morning and just ask for the Neocate milk as they were going to call on Tuesday anyway for an update and said they would give me a prescription if he was no better.
He’s also had a distended tummy and I always just thought it was like that because he was full..

New poop consistency this morning. Do we think it’s better? Maybe no longer CMPA but just silent reflux? He is still in pain with his tummy though..

My sons stomach was exactly the same until we switched the Neocate Syneo.
