How did you make up comfort formula?

I’ve just put my baby onto comfort fomula today due to constipation. I make his bottles by
1litre fresh water in kettle and boil
5oz of boiling water in bottle then add 5 scoops of comfort formula
swirl to combine
put bottle in cold jug of water to cool

I’ve noticed the comfort formula seperates from the water shortly after it’s been swirled. I tried giving a harsh shake (I know swirling is recommended instead of shaking) but still to no avail as it combines then a minute later there’s clumps of formula again? It’s also creating loads of bubbles which probably won’t do any good for baby.

is this just a comfort milk thing? If yours wasn’t like this how did you make it?

I have to admit we got a perfect prep machine again. I wanted to try making how you do, but the thought of doing that on a night feed whilst tired and baby hungry, just puts me off. Perfect prep has always mixed formulas well and I’ve used 4 different types across my children.
was your baby already on formula or BF? If they were already on formula, then buying ready made liquid formula (of exactly the same brand & type you are already using) is a good trick to try and shift constipation. I’m doing it right now with my baby and just giving them the ready made liquid to try and help move things along

@LilacPonyi wanted to get a prep machine but midwife said it only uses a hot shot which isnt enough to kill the bacteria in formula and it needs to be same amount of boiling water to oz of formula😅I’m a first time mum so just listened to what she said as I had no clue. He has always been on sma since birth but all of a sudden really constipated. He has 5oz every 2hrs as recommended by HV (he’s a big baby and always hungry I feed on demand which works out every 2-3hrs) he’s 13lb at 4 weeks old. I did try the ready made trick but it wasn’t doing anything for him. I think he just has so much milk so often his digestive system can’t keep up for the sheer amount. I tried to reduce his milk but he screamed for more milk instead. He seems happy and content with the 5oz every few hours. I took him to the gp as he had a tear and bled a little as his poo was so hard. They gave me laxatives for him and said to move over to comfort milk

The prep machine is fine, look how many people use them , some midwives are pro , some are anti but ultimately used correctly they’re safe .
you can roll the bottle on its side if that makes sense but you can’t make comfort formula in advance as you’ve realised it’s too thick and clumpy x

@bugalugs45 same as the nuby rapid cool, she said that I shouldn’t be using it with hot shot method then cool rest of water and add to formula and hot shot but I know so many people who do! It’s making my life so much harder😆I’ve been making his bottles fresh as and when he wants one so not in advance - make bottle put it in ice water to cool for 5 mins then feed but even then the formula seperates and clumps 😣I’ve found if I keep pausing his feed to shake again it’s not to bad. I’m just worried if it’s not dissolved 100% it’s going to make him ill

You sound like you’re doing absolutely brilliant! Do what you are comfortable with - that’s the most important thing. It’s a guess, but could the separation be due to the formula being made with boiling water which is then cooled down and the sudden temperature change causes the separation maybe?
I have used a perfect prep with three children and all ok. Do some research if you want, just always do what you’re comfortable with xx

@LilacPony thank you!🥰 this evening I left the water to cool for 5 mins then sterilised a spoon and mixed the formula with the spoon and it combined loads better☺️

I did think of those small electric hand whisks, the ones they use in coffee shops, but that would probably make too much bubbles. Sterilised spoon is perfect!

Imonmyway · 29/03/2025 21:22

How long do you let the boiled water cool? It's supposed to cool to 70 degrees, which bar testing you are guessing (probably) the perfect prep is exactly 70 degrees...obviously it's your call what you do snd sounds like you're a great mum

anonny55 · 29/03/2025 21:27

@LilacPonyi was thinking to get one of those too😂luckily a spoon works well, thanks for the help😊xx

@Imonmywayhey, I have a water thermometer that I use to make sure the water in the flask is still hot enough to use when we go out, the water was 80 something today when I left to cool a little before adding the powder..it may have just been because I was pouring straight from kettle and adding powder without letting the water cool a little first like pp suggested , thank you!🥰
