hi, I am feeding my 16 wk old but I have a stomach bug I think, my dh has had it for the past week and has now given it to me , I am making sure my hands are thoroughly washed etc before touching lo but what effect will bf have on her? I have called the doctor but they have this triage service which basically means unless you head is hanging it will take them about 5.5 hrs to get back to you! Any advice would be gratefully appreciated

just keeo feeding her when she needs it and try and keep your fluids up if you can. She will get the nutrition from you anyway. You can still take dioralyte (sp?) if you need it.

bf is the best thing for her - she can't catch the bug from you through your milk, but she will get your antibodies to help her fight it if she does catch it

don't worry too hard re washing hands before touching her every time - the key thing is to wash them really well after going to the loo or changing nappies.

remember to keep yourself hydrated and you'll all be fine

keep drinking plenty of fluids and get as much rest as you can . Any adverse affects will be on you not your DD.

alarkaspree · 12/05/2008 09:51

You will be producing antibodies to the bug which will be in your milk, so if you're lucky your dd won't get it.

keep feeding her, drink lots, get someone else to look after her whilst you rest bringing her to you for feeding.

I had D&V when DS2 was about 6 weeks old.. not fun but we got through it.

your mil won't have the bug in it, but yes vigilance with hand washing is good.

Hope you feel better soon

StealthPolarBear · 12/05/2008 09:55

Your dd is more likely to get it from you if you aren't bf IMO.
Hope you are feeling up to bf - We all had a similar thing when DS was about the same age and trying to look after a LO when you're feeling rough is awful. Hope it's over soon.

Poohbah · 12/05/2008 09:55

I wouldn't worry at all. If she does get the D and V just keep your fluids up and keep breastfeeding. My DS had projectile vomiting when he was about 9 weeks old and he just kept feeding for comfort and never became dehydrated, lots of other bottlefed babies ended up in A&E / hospital with the bug.

thanks everyone- so glad that I don't have to change to ff as she fights the bottle much easier (and more fun) bf! I am just going to drink loads of water today and eat soup hopefully it will pass! x

DD1 and I had D&V when DD2 was about 2 weeks old. I carried on BF, DD2 did not get ill. It was awful though - dp was away in France, we were housebound as DD1 had sicked all over the carseat so we couldn't pop out, didn't feel well enough to walk. I asked my family for help on Monday, one of them finally dropped me some bread and nappies round on Thursday

Hope it's not too grim for you.

my niece and nephew just had this d and v bug and my ds was in very close contact with him. He did not catch it because imo he is bf and has been since birth (2.4years) formula does not carry antibodies. Keep it up its the best thing for your dc
