Pumping and breastfeeding

kihf100 · 06/03/2025 11:24

I need some advice please!
I have extremely painful cracked nipples. I am currently exclusively breastfeeding but I have had cracked open sores on my nipples for the entire time breastfeeding my 6 week old.
I am working with a lactation consultant but cannot see her for another week.
My left is particularly bad and I would like to give it a rest by pumping, but I have no idea how it works. How much is needed for a feed? When should I pump? Is it ok to mix bottle and breast? Is it best to pump when he's ready for a feed and give it straight away?
Thank you x

So sorry that you haven't had any replies yet @kihf100.

It sounds as though you've need someone trained to help.

Could you call one of the BFing Helplines this evening?

I'd also have a read of these articles if you can:

I would feed from the right and pump from the left at the same time, then give the pumped milk straight after baby is finished on the right. You can mix bottle and breast. If giving a bottle of formula, you should pump for that feed to keep up supply. HTH!

Are you taking paracetamol too @kihf100?

Hi, NICU nurse here. I would be questioning why your nipples are so cracked. Does your baby have tongue tie? Sounds like poor latch, as it shouldn't be painful and definitely not cracked.
Try expressing and bottle feeding combined. Feed baby one side, express from the other. Give to baby when feeding cues. Or if this is still painful try to express and bottle feeding combined. Expressing should be done 8-10 times in 24hours, at least once overnight. Expressed milk can be stored in the fridge if going to be used within a couple of days. Express for 15-20 mins each side, use compress and massage and lasinoh nipple cream. Ensure the flange is the correct size (ie. Nipple not rubbing against the edges). Double pump if you can as it improves supply. Is your baby gaining weight? If so I would definitely question a tongue tie as it sounds like they are getting milk but not latching correctly. Try and see a lactation consultant before another week. La Leche league is useful for info.
Good luck and hopefully you heal soon x
