Expressing due to sore nipples

Due to a poor early latch my nipple on one breast is really sore and I can’t bare to feed on that side. I’ve started to pump to keep up the supply on that side but baby is only 9 days old so my plan is to feed exclusively on the other side under the cracks heel. Anyone had any similar experiences ? When did you first give breastfed baby expressed milk in a bottle ? Thanks in advance !

Silver nipple cups will help you heal. Sorry no advice on the bottle feeding

Hi OP

Midwife and new 2nd time mum here!

My baby came at 36 weeks 8 weeks ago, and refused to latch onto the right breast at all until week 3, then latched with a shield from weeks 3-5 then eventually latched in a rugby ball hold position.

Because of this, he had expressed EBM from my right side via syringe, with Kendamil formula top ups at birth from a bottle due to his gestation for the 1st few days. As soon as my milk came in properly he had EBM from that side in a bottle until he eventually latched.

He will now feed pretty much exclusively from both sides but will take a bottle of formula/EBM if necessary eg. dealing with clingy toddler 🤣

Each baby is different, my eldest wouldn't take a bottle or dummy at all as it caused a set back in his latch.

I would pump the sore side to keep up supply but give the latch a rest, lots of nipple cream and make sure your baby latches well on the 'good' side so they keep the knack of a nice, deep latch that breastfeeding usually requires.

Thank you , I suppose we won’t know if he will take both until we try!
