KIT day - will I need to take pump 11month ebf

Hello,

I have an upcoming KIT day where I will be away from my soon to be 11 month old baby 7am -7.30pm.

She usually feeds 6am, 10am, 2pm and 7pm. I have left her for 6 hours before and my boobs have felt fine but this is obviously a lot longer! I will feed her at 6.30am and then again when I get in at 7.30 so really it is the two day time feeds she will miss.

Do you think I will need to take a manual pump with me and express for comfort? I don’t own a pump so I am questioning whether I need to go out and get one just for this day.

thank you!

I would have needed to yes, can you borrow a pump? My local bf group loans them out. You may not be able to pump though, so it would be best to trial it first. Any way someone could bring the baby to you at lunch?

No unfortunately it’s a long commute so there’s no way baby could be brought to me. I have put it off for so long as I was worried about leaving her! But I am back to work soon so have to bite the bullet and almost use this KIT day as a trial run of leaving her for the full day.

thank you for the tip about local BF groups, I hadn’t thought of that!

I personally didn't to at that age. When my LO started nursery we just went for longer stretches between feeds with no issues. Could you just get a cheap suction pump (like Hakka) that you could use if needed for comfort but you might be surprised that you're fine!

I went back to work in January when my baby was 11 months. He had a similar feeding pattern - 8am, 11am, 3pm and 8pm. I missed the middle two feeds and although my boobs were very full when I got home, I wasn’t uncomfortable. I did get home at 5 though so only two hours late for the second missed feed.

If you do find it uncomfortable and you’re not worried about storing every drop, you can hand express a little down the sink at work to relieve pressure.

I hope your KIT day goes well! Exciting to be back.

I was very prone to mastitis and also appreciated the additional breaks from an intense job. I used a manual pump and later a £30 in bra electric one from Amazon. I would keep up the pumping when you normally feed for a KIT day and then decide how often when you go back depending on how you feel the day after a work day.

Thank you all - I might buy a very cheap manual pump just in case and then if I feel like I really needed it I can invest in something more expensive for when I return to work three weeks later.

excited for my KIT day however nervous as DD won’t touch cows milk or expressed milk from bottle or cups even when I had been gone six hours. We have had some success with oat milk and she is a very good eater so fingers crossed she is okay whilst I am gone for so long!

@FloraPoste42 do you mind me asking when your baby eventually dropped the day feeds? My plan was to wean at 12 months but it does not look like she is ready to drop the day feeds any time soon, let alone wean completely.

Hello,

He’s one this week and hasn’t dropped them yet! He is sporadic on the mid morning feed though.

He is only at nursery two days a week - on those days I breastfeed him before work and he will drink a bottle of milk over the whole day at nursery, alongside three solid meals and a snack. He does seem to be very thirsty when I pick him up - he has a very long feed when I get home and another long feed at bedtime, plus maybe one more night feed than usual. I do find it a bit of a step change that I can’t control / monitor his food intake at nursery in the way I was able to on mat leave, but I know he is capable of eating solids and I know he is offered solids, so I just have to trust that if he’s hungry at nursery he’ll eat!

Wishing you all the best for the return to work and for your little one starting nursery. X

I went back to work just before 12 months, 4 days a week. He would accept milk in a straw cup at afternoon nap time from others but would demand a middle of the day feed/prior to nap time on the three days we were together up to 15 months, he was less bothered about the morning feed after 12 months, the bedtime feed was the last to go at 18 months. I expect he would have carried on with the bedtime feed but I had a health issue that meant it was easier to wean.
