Baby 8 months taking omeprazole

So we have struggled with reflux since birth with my little one. We were given Infant gavison at first which helped a little but made him very constipated.we then had to give him lactose as we couldn't reduce the gavison because he would be sick so much his weight gain was very slow.

His reflux improved slightly at 6 months when we began weaning but he is still sick quite often. The worst symptoms he gets are not being able to lay flat or in his tummy for very long and not sleeping. He naps for about 30 mins twice a day and wakes screaming and often has wind.

The evening sleep is just as bad he sleeps in his cot again for about 30/40mins before he's awake crying then I have to hold him but even then he will wake every two hours over night screaming. He will scream and scream until he has a breast feeding which I assume is making the problem worse.

We have been prescribed omeprazole and are wondering if anyone has had a similar situation or any advice on how we can make him a bit more comfortable and all of us can get a little more sleep.

Just for reference he is a very good eater and his eating three meals a day and snacks most days and having a drink of water with meals.

You say you have been prescribed omeprazole - have you started giving it to him?

In my son's case omeprazole helped a lot with his silent reflux although his sleep was beyond help by the time he got it.

Had he got any of these symptoms of Tongue Tie @Catdowntown?

Organisedwannabe · 17/02/2025 07:03

Have you considered allergies?

Have you considered allergies?

I think that's a good call at this stage. @Catdowntown have you read Dairy and other food sensitivities in BF babies? Wink

minnieot · 17/02/2025 07:09

I'd definitely have a look into CMPA x

TinyMouseTheatre · 17/02/2025 07:19

This article from Allergy UK is good too Flowers

Yes he has been taking it for about a week now. We have seen a very small improvement with him laying on his back for short periods and even his front for short periods but no help with sleep. He woke every hour and a half last night.

What do you mean beyond help?

Sorry I don't think my link on TT worked, it should be here Flowers

Catdowntown · 17/02/2025 12:15

He has had his tongue tie cut twice 🙈

I haven't considered allergies, I'll have a look into this thanks.

It's so odd because this morning he has slept for an hour and a half alone but propped up a bit because he was in the pram.

I was watching him if course

He got used to waking up every 1.5 hrs at night and naps only happened in a sling, on me, upright. Getting him to sleep better was very difficult and involved a sleep specialist.

But hey, it cured his silent reflux and he stopped screaming for hours every day. That's a win for me.

When the day comes when you want to stop omeprazole, do it very gradually. I heard horror stories about weaning kids off it so I reduced the dose veeeery gradually over about a month. Don't go cold turkey!

My daughter is 4.5 and had been on omperazole since she was 8 weeks!
It really helps but only at the highest dose so she has other meds too. She also has multiple food allergies but the reflux is in addition to the food allergies. The reflux is absolutely awful for her sleep. One thing I have learnt about reflux is it's not linear. Every time she has a growth spurt it gets worse then it gets better as she gets stronger then worse again with the next growth spurt

Oh I haven't heard of that tea thanks @OpenWriter I will look into it. Any nice and natural that could help, he gets so much wind. It does seem most times when he wakes he has wind.

I am sorry to hear your daughter Is still so bad with reflux @Superscientist it's so hard isn't it. I have another doctors appointment in two weeks so I can maybe mention increasing his dose then.

I feel so bad having him on the medication as I know it can be really bad for you.

It's hard but my daughter has no quality of life when the medication isn't at the right dose. She wakes every 40 minutes only sleeping if I'm holding her upright. She complains daily of stomach pain struggles to eat and it caused a cavity in one of her molars.
No one has expressed any concern about her being on omperazole and she hasn't had any side effects. She's always on the highest dose for her age. She's on another medication domperidone. That one they are more conservative with as it can have problematic side effects. She's on the lowest dose that controls symptoms and if the omperazole can be increased that is done in preference to the domperidone. She's been under paeds since 4 months.

Be careful about trying that tea. There are always random posts on MN about this tea that are clearly hidden ads and frankly the amount you are supposed to give is ridiculous. Usually they get reported and deleted. You are supposed to give 2-8oz 3-4 times per day - that is going to massively impact the amount of water / milk that your baby wants when they are still under 1 and should be focused on weaning plus breast milk / formula. They also have an "affiliate" programme that smacks of being a MLM. I'd avoid.

Catdowntown · 19/02/2025 15:53

Oh god that's a lot. He is under 1 so I will just stick with his milk and water at meal times. I haven't looked into it yet but if that is the case I don't think we will be trying it . Thanks you @NoIncomeTaxNoVAT
